USA Basketball Annual Awards

USA Basketball presents annual awards to its top male and female athletes, teams, national team and developmental national team coaches. Additionally, the Edward R. Steitz Award is presented to an individual for her or his valuable contributions to international basketball. The awards, their descriptions and award winners can be found below.

USA Basketball Athlete of the Year Award

An annual award since 1980, the USA Basketball Female and Male Athlete of the Year awards are symbolic of the top female and male players for USA Basketball during the year's international competition. Recipients of USA Basketball's Female and Male Athlete of the Year awards automatically become eligible for consideration for the annual U. S. Olympic Committee (USOC) Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year awards.

USA Basketball Team of the Year Award

Recognizing the year's most outstanding team officially for the first time in 1996, USA Basketball's Team of the Year Award recognizes the top female or male USA Basketball squad for its accomplishments during the year's international competitions.

With its selection, USA Basketball's Team of the Year is eligible for consideration for the U. S. Olympic Committee's (USOC) Team of the Year Award.

USA Basketball National Coach of the Year Award

Initiated in 1996, the USA Basketball National Coach of the Year Award was established to recognize a USA Basketball head coach who during the year of the award, made a significant impact on the success of individual athlete and team performance at the highest level of competition.

The recipient of USA Basketball's National Coach of the Year Award also becomes eligible for the annual U. S. Olympic Committee (USOC) National Coach of the Year Award.

Edward S. Steitz Award

USA Basketball's Edward S. Steitz Award is named in memory of Edward S. Steitz. Thelongtime Director of Athletics at Springfield College (Mass.), Mr. Steitz was a recognized worldwide authority on the rules of basketball and one of the original founders and a past president of USA Basketball's predecessors, the Basketball Federation of the USA (BFUSA) and the Amateur Basketball Association of the United States of America (ABAUSA).

The Edward S. Steitz Award recognizes an individual for her or his valuable contributions to international basketball.
