2014 USA Basketball Men's National Teams -- Eligibility Information

In 2014 USA Basketball will field six men's teams for international events. In the traditional full-court, 5-on-5 game, USA Basketball will field 12-member teams for the FIBA Basketball World Cup, FIBA U17 World Championship, FIBA Americas U18 Championship and the annual Nike Hoop Summit. In 3x3 action, USA Basketball will send four-member teams to the Youth Olympic Games and to the FIBA 3x3 World Championship.

USA Basketball selection committees are responsible for selecting athletes to be invited to team trials, the actual selection of each 12-member team and ongoing performance evaluations of team members. While participation on a USA Basketball team is by invitation only, all interested players are encouraged to download the USA Basketball Athlete Consideration Form and return the completed form to USA Basketball by March 1, 2014, to ensure consideration. Each 2014 event is summarized below to better understand the opportunities for athletes this summer.

2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup

The 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup will be held Aug. 30 – Sept. 14, 2014, in Barcelona and Madrid, Spain. The 2014 USA team will be comprised of selected members of the 2014-16 USA Basketball Men’s National Team program. Athletes for the 2014 USA squad will be evaluated and selected by the USA Basketball Men’s National Team managing director Jerry Colangelo during various USA National Team training camps and throughout the NBA season.

2014 FIBA U17 World Championship

The 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship will be held Aug. 8-16 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The USA U17 World Championship Team will be comprised of members of the 2013-14 USA Basketball Developmental National Team.  

The USA Developmental National Team will begin training camp July 24, 2014, and athletes on the 12-member team will return home following the conclusion of the tournament. Athletes interested in receiving an invitation to the USA Developmental National Team should submit the USA Player Athlete Consideration form by March 1, 2014.

2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship

The 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship serves as the qualifying tournament for the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship. Training camp for the 2014 USA U18 National Team is scheduled for June 9-19, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Following the announcement of finalists the 12-member team on June 11, athletes will continue training in Colorado Springs, and will return home following the conclusion of the tournament. Athletes will receive an invitation to attend the trials by early March.

2014 Nike Hoop Summit

The Nike Hoop Summit is an annual basketball game played under international rules. The Nike Hoop Summit features the USA Basketball Men’s Junior Select Team, comprised of the top high school boy senior players, playing against a World Select Team, comprised of top players 19-years-old or younger from around the globe.

Athletes will receive an invitation from the USA Basketball Men’s Developmental National Team Committee to be a member of the 2014 USA Junior National Select Team over the winter.

2014 Youth Olympic Games

The 2014 Youth Olympic Games will be held Aug. 16-28 in Nanjing, China. In order to be eligible, athletes must participate in at least one FIBA-sanctioned 3x3 tournament in 2014 prior to the USA Basketball 3x3 U18 National Championship Tournament, which will be held May 30-June 1, 2014, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Teams must be selected through their respective 3x3 tournaments and approved by USA Basketball in order to receive an invitation to participate in the 2014 USA Basketball 3x3 U18 National Championship. Further, athletes must register with FIBA and create their player profile on FIBA's 3x3planet.com.

While the minimum requirement to compete in the 2014 USA 3x3 U18 National Championship Tournament is to participate in at least one FIBA-sanctioned 3x3 tournament, the 2014 USA 3x3 U18 National Championship will be seeded according to FIBA 3x3 rankings. Therefore, USA Basketball encourages athletes to compete in as many FIBA-sanctioned 3x3 tournaments as possible in order to increase your ranking.

The winner of the 2014 USA 3x3 U18 National Championship will be named to the 2014 USA Basketball Youth Olympic Games Team.

Athletes must compete in at least one of these events in order to be eligible to participate in the 2014 USA Basketball 3x3 U18 National Championship Tournament, but it is strongly encouraged to compete in as many as possible to increase seeding in the 2014 USA 3x3 U18 National Championship Tournament.

  • Players eligible for this team must be U.S. citizens between 16-18 years old (born between Jan. 1, 1996 and Dec. 31, 1997).

2014 FIBA 3X3 World Championship

The 2014 FIBA 3x3 World Championship will be held June 5-7, 2014, in Moscow, Russia, and the championship will be played using FIBA's 3x3 format. In order to be eligible, athletes must participate in at least one FIBA-sanctioned 3x3 tournament in 2014 prior to the USA Basketball Open 3x3 National Championship, which will be held May 9-11, 2014, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Teams must be selected through their respective 3x3 tournaments and approved by USA Basketball in order to receive an invitation to participate in the 2014 USA Basketball Open 3x3 National Championship. Further, athletes must register with FIBA and create their player profile on FIBA's 3x3planet.com.
