Getting To Know the 2010 USA Nike Hoop Summit Team: Tobias Harris

March 12, 2010 - Colorado Springs, Colo.

As one of the seven 2010 USA Nike Hoop Summit Team members to have earned a state title in 2009, which he did while playing with Long Island Lutheran (N.Y.), Tobias Harris is also one of five U.S. team members currently in the hunt for another championship in 2010.

Playing at Half Hollow Hills West H.S. (N.Y.) for his senior season, Harris led Hills West to a come-from-behind victory in the Suffolk County Class 2A title game with 25 points, 13 rebounds, six blocks and three steals in a 77-69 win over Longwood H.S. on March 3.

Three days later, Hills West, going without  Harris who was unable to play because of an injured toe, inched past Class A champion Haborfields, 68-63, for the 2010 Suffolk County championship.  The game was a matchup between the large-school and small-school champions, and in winning Hills West became the first Class 2A team to win the title in three years.

Next up for Harris and Hills West is a game against Uniondale H.S. for the Long Island 2A Championship on March 13 at Hofstra University. Harris is expected to play, and he told USABasketball.com in a recent phone interview that he expects to win.

On his high school team in the playoffs:
I think we are ready, and I'm very excited about it. I think the whole team is expecting to win the game. We worked hard to get here.

Do you feel pressure to win another title?

I don't really think about the pressure. I just try to go out there and play the best I can play, and whatever happens, happens. Hopefully we will be able to win the game.

For someone who hasn't seen you play, how would you describe your game?
I'm about 6-8, shoot the ball from outside and handle it like a guard, or I can go down low. I try to get everybody involved the game.

What would you most like to improve?
Everything about my game. Probably to improve my defense would be the most important.

What is your favorite workout or drill?
I don't really have a favorite; I just do what my trainers say. I have two trainers. With one trainer I work on my strenght and agility, and with the other trainer we work on my basketball skills.

Do you have a least favorite workout or drill?
Not really. I do what I need to do.

What motivates you?
Being the best person I can be and being the best player I can be on the floor motivates me. I thank God also. I just want to be the best.

Do you have role model?
Probably somebody like Kobe Bryant just because of how hard he works.

Is there a U.S. team member that you haven't played with yet?
No, we pretty much all know each other.

Is there a U.S. player you are looking forward to playing with?
Me and Kendall Marshall are pretty cool, and he's a point guard, so that would probably be who I'm looking forward to playing with most.

Why did you chose the University of Tennessee?
It was a family atmosphere, and the relationship I have with the coaches there.

Are you looking forward to playing in the Rose Garden?
Yes. The Rose Garden always looks real nice on TV, and it should be a great place to play.

What do you know about the Nike Hoop Summit?
I know we are playing the best of the best from overseas. I know we fell short last year, so we really got to win this year.

What do you hope to accomplish in your time with USA Basketball?
Just to win. I really want to win.
