USA Men's U16 National Team To Open Against Brazil, Puerto Rico, Venezuela

FIBA Americas today conducted the draw to determine the preliminary round grouping for the 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship For Men, which will be held June 17-21 in Mendoza, Argentina. The USA was placed in Group A along with Brazil, Puerto Rico and Venezuela; while Group B consists of host Argentina, Bahamas, Canada and Mexico. The schedule of games will be announced by FIBA Americas at a later date.

The U.S. team that will compete in the '09 FIBA Americas U16 Championship will be selected during the USA Basketball Men's Developmental National Team training camp, featuring approximately 20 of the nation's top 16-and-unders, June 6-12 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The12-member team that will represent the U.S. this summer will be announced prior to the USA's June 13 departure for Argentina.

Don Showalter of Mid-Prairie High School (Iowa) will serve as head coach for the 2009-10 USA Basketball Men's Developmental National Team. Showalter will be assisted by Herman Harried, head coach Lake Clifton High School (Md.), and Kevin Sutton, head coach at Montverde Academy (Fla.).

The USA U16 National Team will look to capture the gold medal at the inaugural 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship, and qualify for the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship. In order to be eligible for both of these age-based events, an athlete must be a U.S. citizen born on or after January 1, 1993.

The eight-team tournament in 2009 will feature U16 national teams from the FIBA Americas Zone, which includes North, South and Central America and the Caribbean. Preliminary round-robin play will take place June 17-19, with the top two teams from each preliminary group advancing to the July 20 semifinals. The gold medal will be contested July 21. The top three finishing nations will qualify to compete in the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship (dates and site TBD), against U17 national teams from around the globe.
