USA Men’s U19 Team Member Jerami Grant Diagnosed With Mononucleosis, Unable To Participate In FIBA U19 World Championship

-- University Of Pittsburgh Guard James Robinson Added To USA U19 Roster --

June 25, 2013 • Prague, Czech Republic

USA Basketball U19 World Championship Team member Jerami Grant (Syracuse University/Bowie, Md.) will be unable to participate in the upcoming FIBA U19 World Championship after it was learned today that he has been diagnosed with mononucleosis. USA Basketball also announced that James Robinson (University of Pittsburgh/Mitchellville, Md.) has been selected to complete the USA 12-man roster.

The USA U19 team is currently in Prague, Czech Republic, preparing for the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship for Men that is slated to be played June 27-July 7. The U.S. opens preliminary play June 27 versus Ivory Coast, and then faces China on June 28 and Russia on June 29.  Second round play is being held July 1-3, with quarterfinals, semifinal and finals scheduled for July 5-7.

“I’m disappointed and feel bad for Jerami,” said USA U19 World Championship Team head coach Billy Donovan. “Unfortunately even since the tryouts he just never seemed himself; it seemed like he was ailing – he had a sore throat, then it was strep throat and nothing really helped; we even got him on penicillin and we took him for some blood work and it came back mono. I feel bad for him, one, because he can’t play; two, we’re already here (Prague, Czech Republic) and it’s one of those things you wish for him that we could have found this out in Colorado, but obviously there was no way of knowing that.

“I think bringing James (Robinson) back is a good thing because he played last year on our U18 team; he was one of the last guys not to make this year’s team; we made the decision this year to go with five guards and seven front court guys, and that’s a little bit of a different look than it was last year when we were a little bit more guard heavy. James coming back gives us some stability at the point guard spot, gives us another strong, physical guard, gives us a guy that had a lot of playing experience last year at Pitt. I feel bad for Jerami but also happy that James will get a chance to be part of the team as well.”

As a member of the gold medalist USA U18 National Team, Robinson led the U.S. squad in assist-to-turnover ratio (12:2) and finished second on the team in steals (1.4 spg.), while averaging 4.4 points and 2.6 rebounds during the five-game tournament. As a freshman, he started 32 of 33 games for Pittsburgh and led the Panthers as well as the Big East in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.83), ranked second in assists (116) and posted 6.1 points and 2.1 rebounds a game.

Members of the USA U19 World Championship Team include Michael Frazier (University of Florida/Tampa, Fla.); Aaron Gordon (Archbishop Mitty H.S./San Jose, Calif.); Montrezl Harrell (University of Louisville/Tarboro, N.C.); Jahlil Okafor (Whitney Young H.S./Chicago, Ill.); Elfrid Payton (University of Louisiana at Lafayette/Gretna, La.); Marcus Smart (Oklahoma State University/Flower Mound, Texas); Jarnell Stokes (University of Tennessee/Memphis, Tenn.); Rasheed Sulaimon (Duke University/Houston, Texas); Mike Tobey (University of Virginia/Monroe, N.Y.); Nigel Williams-Goss (Findlay Prep/Happy Valley, Ore.); and Justise Winslow (St. Johns H.S./Houston, Texas).

Assisting Donovan as assistant coaches for the 2013 USA U19 World Championship Team are Tony Bennett (University of Virginia) and Shaka Smart (Virginia Commonwealth University).
