Ahead of the USA Basketball Men’s National Team’s exhibition games at Madison Square Garden, players and coaches will visit the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on Monday, Aug. 18 in support of the program’s Commitment to Service collaboration with the U.S. Department of Defense.

The USA Team will stage an open practice at 2 p.m. (EDT) at Christl Arena for military members and their families. Players expected to be on hand include DeMarcus Cousins (Sacramento Kings), Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors), Anthony Davis (New Orleans Pelicans), DeMar DeRozan (Toronto Raptors), Andre Drummond (Detroit Pistons), Kenneth Faried (Denver Nuggets), Rudy Gay (Sacramento Kings), James Harden (Houston Rockets), Gordon Hayward (Utah Jazz), Kyrie Irving (Cleveland Cavaliers), Kyle Korver(Atlanta Hawks), Damian Lillard (Portland Trail Blazers), Chandler Parsons (Dallas Mavericks), Mason Plumlee (Brooklyn Nets), Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls) and Klay Thompson (Golden State Warriors). ESPN2 will televise the two-hour USA Basketball practice session, which will also be available on WatchESPN.

“As a beacon of training and commitment, I cannot think of a better place for the team to prepare for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup than the U.S. Military Academy,” said Jerry Colangelo, USA Basketball chairman and National Team managing director. “Our players are very excited to meet servicemen and women who also have a strong desire to represent their country.”

West Point is an especially familiar locale for former cadet and USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski.

“I’m always thrilled to return to West Point and visit with the current group of cadets,” said Krzyzewski. “Military training and sports both offer tremendous lessons and skills to carry with you the rest of your life. This is an excellent opportunity for these men and women to learn from one another in a personal setting.”

Krzyzewski’s entire coaching staff will also be on site, including Syracuse University and Naismith Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim, Chicago Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau and New Orleans Pelicans head coach Monty Williams.

On the morning of Aug. 18, players and coaches will tour the U.S. Military Academy and interact with cadets. The day will begin with a visit to West Point Cemetery where families of those lost in battle will meet with players, followed by the cadets demonstrating some of their most challenging training modules for the team. Just before the USA’s training session begins, players and coaches will dine in the mess hall to spend some time with the cadets.

To enhance the experience for the West Point community, USA Basketball will host a pair of Hoops for Troops basketball and fitness clinics for local youth on Sunday, Aug. 17 at Christl Arena. NBA Legends Chris MullinFelipe Lopez and Pat Garrity and WNBA Legend Teresa Weatherspoon will run the day’s activities with the first clinic for grades 4-6 (boys) and 4-8 (girls) beginning at 2 p.m. (EDT) and the second clinic for children in grades K-3 beginning at 3:30 p.m. (EDT).

The American squad will continue its World Cup preparations in New York with a pair of exhibition games at Madison Square Garden, Aug. 20 against Dominican Republic, and Aug. 22 versus Puerto Rico. The USA will complete its pre-World Cup exhibition tour on the island of Gran Canaria, Spain. Training Aug. 24-25, the U.S. will close out its exhibition tour on Aug. 26 facing Slovenia at Gran Canaria Arena. Conducting a basketball clinic for youth on Aug. 27 in Dakar, Senegal, the USA team will complete its training for the FIBA (International Basketball Federation) Basketball World Cup Aug. 28-29 in Bilbao, Spain, the site of its World Cup preliminary round games.

The 2014 World Cup, featuring a total of 24 national teams, is scheduled to be held Aug. 30-Sept. 14 in Spain. The USA will play its preliminary round games in Bilbao, after being drawn into Group C along with teams from the Dominican Republic, Finland, New Zealand, Turkey and Ukraine.
