The U.S. women opened the World Championship facing Senegal and romped to a lopsided 106-36 victory. South Korea fell next to the powerful American squad, 87-55, and the U.S. finished off its pool play 3-0 after posting a strong 86-59 win over Czechoslovakia.

Facing a strong and talented squad from Cuba, which only weeks earlier had defeated the USA women twice in a pair of exhibition games in Cuba, the U.S., behind veteran Teresa Edwards' play, managed to overcome a first-half deficit and post an 87-78 win. Trailing 47-45 at half, the USA women rallied behind relentless full-court pressure that was led by Edwards and 30-year-old veteran Lynette Woodard. The U.S. pressure limited Cuba to just 43.2 percent shooting from the floor and the U.S. was credited with 17 steals, while Edwards and Woodard led the way with five and four steals, respectively. Edwards connected on four of five three-pointers and finished with 32 points.

Against Canada one day later, the U.S. again trailed at the half and again stormed back in the second half for the win. Trailing at intermission 42-41, Edwards, who finished the game with 32 points again, went to work in the later 20 minutes to help lead the American women to the 95-70 victory over Canada. Looking to advance to the semifinals with an unblemished record, the U.S. easily disposed of Bulgaria, 93-72. In the win, Jennifer Azzi sank three of four three-point tries and scored a team leading 13 points, while Edwards and Katrina McClain each tossed in 12 points in the win.

Facing Czechoslovakia for the second time in seven days, the outcome was almost exactly the same. Playing this time for the right to go on to the gold medal game, the American women, who had recorded an 86-59 win in the first meeting, this time around earned an 87-59 victory as Edwards and McClain accounted for 23 and 16 points each.

The USA then clinched its second consecutive World Championship gold medal after recording an 88-78 win over Yugoslavia. McClain paced the U.S. offensive attack, recording 23 points while grabbing nine rebounds. Edwards added 17 points and Cynthia Cooper tossed in 13 points in the win.
