Gold Medalist Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis Earns Player of the Year Honor

Two-time USA Basketball gold medalist and Mater Dei High School (Calif.) senior Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, was named as the 2011 State Farm®/WBCA High School Player of the Year, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced today.

She aided the 2010 USA U17 World Championship Team to an 8-0 record and catptured the gold medal in France at the inaugural FIBA U17 World Championship. En route to gold, Mosqueda-Lewis started all eight games and averaged a USA third-best 11.6 ppg. to go with 4.0 rpg., while shooting 50.7 percent (34-67 FGs) from the field.

Mosqueda-Lewis helped the U.S. qualify for the U17 Worlds as a member of the 2009 USA U16 National Team that posted a 5-0 mark and captured the 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship gold medal. She started four games and averaged a team-high 14.0 ppg., while contributing 4.6 rpg. and 3.2 apg.

Mosqueda-Lewis currently averages 22.0 ppg. and has scored in double figures in all but one of the Monarchs’ 28 games this season. The 6-foot guard has scored 20 or more points in 20 games, including three games of 30 or more points.

Mosqueda-Lewis has signed with the University of Connecticut, where she will play for 2009-12 USA Basketball Women's National Team head coach Geno Auriemma.

Mater Dei (27-1), the defending California Interscholastic Federation Division II state champion, is currently ranked No. 3 nationally by both USA Today and ESPN.

Mosqueda-Lewis will be formally honored on Saturday, April 2, during the 2011 WBCA National Convention in Indianapolis at a press conference announcing the State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team and State Farm Wade Trophy winner. The convention is held in conjunction with the NCAA® Women’s Final Four®.
