U.S. Women Draw Group A In 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship

On Feb. 10, FIBA conducted the draw for the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship for Women, and the USA has been placed in preliminary round Group A, along with Belgium, Canada, Italy, South Korea and Mali. Playing in preliminary round Group B will be Australia, Brazil, Japan, host Netherlands, Spain and Turkey.
The 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship will be played on Aug. 17-26, 2012, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The USA is the reigning U17 champion for men and women after both teams wrapped up 8-0 records and gold medals at the inaugural events in 2010.
The U.S. women open play against South Korea on Friday, Aug. 17; followed by Canada on Aug. 18; and Italy on Aug. 19. After a rest day for all teams on Aug. 20, the USA will take on Belgium on Aug. 21 and wrap up preliminary round play against Mali on Aug. 22. Games times are still to be determined.
The top four finishing teams from each preliminary round group will advance to the medal quarterfinals on Aug. 24. Winners of the quarterfinals will compete in the medal semifinals on Aug. 25, and the gold medal game will be played on Aug. 26.
The 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship features U17 national teams that qualified through their FIBA zone tournaments. Players eligible for this competition must have been born on or after Jan. 1, 1995.
The American women qualified for the 2012 U17 Worlds by virtue of their gold-medal finish at the 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championship. Also qualifying from the FIBA Americas U16 Championship were silver medalist Brazil and bronze medalist Canada.
Finalists for the eventual 12-member team will be selected following trials, which are set for May 17-20 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
