Opening against Japan, the USA trailed 39-38 at the half but the Americans opened the second half with a 7-0 scoring run that put the USA ahead for good 45-39. Japan never regained the lead and the USA earned the 71-66 victory with the help of 5'8' guard Edna Campbell's team-high 15 points.

Facing Belgium next, the U.S. recorded a 54-51 victory behind a game-high 14 points by 6'1' high school standout Vicki Hall. The score was knotted 28-28 at halftime and remained close through most of the second half. With less than six minutes to go, center Susan Anderson converted on two free throws to put the U.S. in the lead for good 46-45 and the USA went on to win 54-51.

The U.S. easily dispensed of Malaysia 90-45 before facing an undefeated Republic of China team in their fourth contest. Struggling early, the USA managed to hold a 35-32 lead at the half. The U.S. opened the second half with a 25-9 scoring drive to expand its lead to 59-41 and the Republic of China never recovered as the USA cruised to the 83-74 victory with the help of 5'10' Tonya Edwards' game-high 23 points.

The U.S. jumped out early against Canada and sailed to the 69-53 victory behind 17 and 12 points from Lowry and Edwards, respectively.

The USA next defeated Germany 84-69 and was again led by Lowry and Edwards with 22 and 16 points, respectively.

In what would be their toughest battle of the tournament, the USA squared off against an undefeated South Korea team and managed to inch past the Koreans 74-73 for the gold medal behind a team-high 31 points from Lowry.

At halftime the U.S. held a 35-31 advantage, but South Korea managed to tie up the match 43-43 with 13 minutes remaining in the contest. Swapping leads over the remaining minutes, the teams were again knotted at 70 apiece when Edwards was fouled with one minute left. Edwards converted both of her free throws to put the U.S. in front 72-70, but Ki Hwa Shin countered for South Korea with a three-pointer to put South Korea on top 73-72. With the clock running down, Lowrey scored the game's final two points to give the U.S. the 74-73 victory and the gold medal.

Lowry, Edwards and Campbell were selected to the Jones Cup All-Tournament Team after leading the U.S. contingent averaging 14.4 ppg., 12.4 ppg. and 9.7 ppg., respectively.
