Sherri Coale

Sherri Coale (USA and University of Oklahoma head coach)
On the game:
We got out in transition, ran really well, and Shoni Schimmel sort of opened the flood gates for us with her passing ability when we had advantages in transition offense. And just every day that we play together, we get a little bit more comfortable with one another. The chemistry was better, and we communicated better on defense. Every opportunity to log minutes on the floor together as a unit makes us better.

Despite the large win, what areas do you think still need improvement?
Defensively, we did improve. We were better, but we were still a little slow to recognize switches, we were a little bit slow to match up in transition, considering that (Mali) wasn't playing t the pace that most of the teams that we will face will. So, that's going to be tested. Our transition defense was not tested tonight. Blocking out, we just started running to get the rebound in stead of blocking out — that is going to have to be better against more seasoned teams.

How did if feel to open play in the World University Games?
It was a relief, and I think they were relieved to have success with one another. They really seemed to enjoy making one another look good, which was fun to see, and it's going to have to be our M.O. throughout this tournament. And so it was neat to see all of the assists, and the selflessness on the floor, and the team work and the championship behavior. Lots of intangible things really grew over the course of this game.

What worked well for the team tonight?
I think we used the scrimmages really well to learn how to play with one another against a different team. We had only been playing against each other for a week or so before that. I think we came out and had a really good team game. We had a lot of assists. Shoni Schimmel had a great game, almost had a double-double. I think we finally just found some chemistry.

What does the team’s 34 assists say about its unselfishness?
I think it says a lot. One of the biggest points coach Coale has been trying to make is about team basketball. We came out in our first scrimmage against Russia and lost because I think we were playing a little bit selfish. I think tonight we really got it into each other’s mindsets that we need to share the basketball to win this thing.

Bria Hartley

Bria Hartley (University of Connecticut/North Babylon, N.Y.)
What was the team able to do to be so successful?
I think getting some steals and pushing in transition helped us. We were able to push the ball up the court. Shoni had some awesome passes. Odyssey had some awesome passes. We really shared the ball well.

On her shooting performance:
I don't really know why I was so hot. Warming up, I was thinking, 'I like this gym,' and I was hitting shots. My teammates were able to find me, Shoni and Odyssey, and I was just able to knock down shots.

How did if feel to open play in the World University Games?
Definitely. We were all eager to play, and get into it, and kind of sick of practice a little bit, so it was good to get out and play. We had a lot of fun.

Shoni Schimmel

Shoni Schimmel (University of Louisville/Mission, Ore.)
What was the team able to do to be so successful?
I think we just got comfortable with each other, and started feeling out our games with each other, and being able to pass the ball and being able to read each other, it just got us going. We got the jitters out in the first quarter, so for us to be able to do that, it worked in our favor.

On her nine assists:
Just hitting the open player, getting in position to find that open player, and having my guards and everybody run, it just helped a lot. It took getting used to playing with everybody, and it finally came together.

How did if feel to open play in the World University Games?
I felt like we had been here forever, and for us to be able to get that one game under out belt it was a good start, especially doing what we did tonight.
