Amaka Agugua-Hamilton

Amaka Agugua-Hamilton will serve as a court coach for the 2022 USA U18 National Team Trials after being named the Virginia Cavaliers head women’s basketball coach on March 21, 2022. As a court coach, Agugua-Hamilton will assist the USA U18 National Team coaching staff with on-court drills and scrimmages during the May 31-June 4 trials.

Prior to being selected to coach the Cavaliers, Agugua-Hamilton headed the Missouri State basketball program from 2019 to 2022, becoming the first African-American female head coach for any sport at Missouri State. She coached the Lady Bears to a 74-15 record over her three years with the program, where her teams won two Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) regular-season titles (2020, 2021) and played in two NCAA Tournaments (2021, 2022), including a Sweet 16 trip in 2020-21. In her inaugural season, she led Missouri State to its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament since the turn of the century before the postseason was canceled due to the pandemic.

Agugua-Hamilton has twice won MVC Coach of the Year honors (2020, 2021), was named the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Maggie Dixon Rookie Coach of the Year in 2020 and was one of 10 finalists for WBCA National Coach of the Year in 2021. Agugua-Hamilton became just the fourth head coach in Division I history to reach 60 wins in less than 70 games to begin their career at the Division I level in 2022

Additionally, Agugua-Hamilton’s coaching career has included assistant coaching positions with VCU (2007-09), Indiana (2009-11), Old Dominion (2011-13) and Michigan State (2013-15) as well as a four-year stint as the associate head coach at Michigan State (2015-19). 

Agugua-Hamilton got her start in coaching following her playing career at Hofstra, where she was a four-year captain and aAll-Colonial Athletic Association second team selectee in 2004.

Agugua-Hamilton married Billy Hamilton in 2017. The couple has a son, Eze, born in April 2018.
