Katie Gearlds

The head women’s basketball coach at Marian University since 2013-14, Katie Gearlds will enter her first USA Basketball coaching assignment as an assistant for the 2021 USA Basketball Women’s U16 National Team.

As an athlete, Gearlds played with USA Basketball for the North Team at the 2002 Youth Development Festival, finishing 5-0 to win the gold medal at the event.

Gearld owns a 228-49 career record at Marian (all records are as of March 17, 2021). In 2020-21, her squad is 27-5 and has advanced to the NAIA National Championship tournament Final Site, where it will begin play on March 18.

In 2019-20, Marian won 31 games and won the Crossroads League regular season title for a fifth consecutive season and the CL Tournament title for a fourth time during Gearlds career. She was named the 2020 NAIA Coach of the Year and the Crossroads League Coach of the Year.

She also was named the NAIA Coach of the Year in 2016 and 2017 and Crossroad League Coach of the Year honors in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

While the 2019-20 season ended without a NAIA National Tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Gearlds led Marian to a fifth straight NAIA National Tournament in 2018-19 and a 27-7 record.

Marian won NAIA National Championships in 2016 and 2017, record an all-time best 35-3 record in 2017, and reached the NAIA National Tournament Sweet 16 in 2017-18 with a 32-3 final record.

Gearlds was drafted with the No. 7 pick in the 2007 WNBA Draft by the Seattle Storm. From 2007-09, Gearlds played in 87 career games for the Storm and scored a career-best 20 points in 2008 in a game versus Atlanta.

She played professionally in Portugal in 2012-13 and averaged 14.3 ppg. for Alges, where she was part of league and cup championship teams. She spent two seasons (2011-12) in Spain as a professional player and three years (2008-10) in Greece, where she played and served as an assistant coach. She also played in Slovakia in 2007.

She graduated from Purdue University in 2007 and finished her career as the fourth-leading scorer in Boilermaker women's basketball history. From 2003-07, she tallied 1,974 career points and tied the single-season record for points with 707 in 2006-07. She led the team in scoring in 2005-06 and 2006-07 and a pair of Big Ten Tournament championships. She helped lead Purdue to four NCAA Tournament appearances, including the Elite Eight in 2007. She was a three-time All-Big Ten selection and earned first team honors in her junior and senior seasons. As a freshman, she was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and earned honorable mention All-Big Ten. She also was named a third team Associated Press All-American as a senior.

Gearlds was named 2003 Indiana Miss Basketball after her senior season at Beech Grove High School in Indiana. At Beech Grove, she scored 2,521 career points, which ranks sixth in Indiana history. As a senior in 2002-03, she led the state with 30.1 points per game and added 9.4 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 5.1 steals per game in leading her team to the Indiana 3A state championship. She was named a Nike/WBCA All-American and was the 2003 Gatorade Indiana Player of the Year. She also was Associated Press all-state first team as a junior and senior.
