Adetayo Adesanya, Ira Brown, Tyree Hardge and Allen DuBois Williams, playing for Desert Pro-Am, won the 2012 USA Basketball 3x3 National Tournament, held July 6-8 in Colorado Springs, Colo., with an 8-0 record. Following the tournament, the four were selected as the 2012 USA Basketball 3x3 World Championship Team.

The inaugural FIBA 3x3 World Championship featured 24 men’s national teams and 24 women’s national teams competing for gold. In addition to a men’s and women’s 3x3 tournament, the 2012 3x3 World Championship also included medals awarded for individual skills challenges and a mixed tournament.

Fourteen nations participated in the mixed tournament, in which each team was comprised of two men and two women. The U.S. did not compete in the mixed tournament, which was won by France, with Argentina taking silver and Ukraine finishing with the bronze medal.

Also featured during the weekend was a skills contest (women), a dunk contest (men) and a shootout contest (mixed).

Day 1 - August 23
The USA Men’s 3x3 World Championship Team opened with a 17-14 victory over Turkey and followed that up with a 20-14 win over Egypt to close its first day of action.

“The strength of our team is that all four of us can play inside-out, defensively and offensively,” said Williams following the men’s game against Egypt. “We play for each other. We try to do the right thing, make the right play every time. We’re working hard. We really want this.”

Day 2 - August 24
The USA improved to 4-0 after the second day of competition. Opening with a 13-9 victory over England, the U.S. followed that up with a 15-14 win over Lebanon.

“We try to take pride in our defense and being able to take care of our match-ups one-on-one, no matter who we’re guarding,” said the 6-10 Adesanya. “The experience has been phenomenal. Just being able to have the chance to play on this stage is awesome, great. I feel so blessed to be a part of it and my teammates feel the same, especially having the chance to represent the USA.”

Day 3 - August 25
The USA men suffered a close 15-14 setback to Romania in their first game of the day, but still advanced to the next round atop Group D.

Facing Bulgaria in the Eight Finals, the U.S. prevailed 19-17 in a tough contest to keep its medal hopes alive.

However, the U.S. dropped a 20-16 heartbreaker to Serbia in quarterfinals action and were eliminated from the competition with a 5-2 record and finished in seventh place.

“They were a very good team,” said Brown. “They banked in some shots that we didn’t think they would hit and we didn’t make shots that we should have hit. It was just a tough, tough situation.”

Day 4 - August 26
Serbia took the gold medal with a 17-16 victory over France, while Ukraine prevailed 19-18 in overtime against Israel in the bronze medal game.

Winning gold medal in the dunk contest after jumping over a motorcycle for a perfect score of 30 was Venezuela’s Deivi Añanguren Madriz. Adesanya missed his first few attempts to fly over three kids en route to his dunk and claimed silver after receiving a 28, while Georgi Bojanov of Bulgaria and Ometayo Ogedengbe from England were awarded bronze medals.
