The 2012 USA 3x3 women’s team was comprised of Skylar Diggins (University of Notre Dame/South Bend, Ind.), Bria Hartley (University of Connecticut/North Babylon, N.Y.), Chiney Ogwumike (Stanford University/Cypress, Texas) and Ann Strother (Castle Rock, Colo.).

Day 1 - August 23
The USA went 2-0 in preliminary games on day one, earning a 22-9 victory over Germany and a 21-4 win against Angola.

“The first game was a little more of ‘catch your wind’ and also we were trying to get used to the rims because we’re playing outside and the depth perception is different,” said Ogwumike. “But, in the second game we were jelling better. We knew what to run (and) when. We were looking for each other, being aggressive and using our conditioning to our advantage.”

Day 2 - August 24
Day two saw the USA steamroll two more opponents, earning a 21-14 win over previously undefeated Bulgaria and a 21-12 decision against Argentina.

“I think we compliment each other. You have me and Sky (Diggins) who are like playmakers, then you have Ann (Strothers) who is a shooter, then Chiney (Ogwumike) who can bang inside. So you have a bunch of people with different types of games but we all compliment each other. We can shoot it and we can bang it inside as well, so it’s good to have a variety of options when you’re playing these teams,” said Hartley.

Day 3 - August 25
The U.S. women finished preliminary play as the No. 1 seed of Group D, then advanced through to medal semifinals after earning two medal round victories.

The USA women remained undefeated after rolling to a 21-2 victory over Netherlands to close preliminary play 5-0. The USA next eclipsed Estonia 21-11 in the first knockout game and then moved into the semifinals with a 21-8 win over Hungary.

Through its first seven games, the U.S. won each game by scoring 21 points, the only nation to do so in the competition.

“I think we’ve been real aggressive,” said Strother, about how her team won its first seven games before the 10:00 regulation period ended.

Day 4 - August 26
Defeating eventual bronze medalist Australia 19-18 in the medal round semifinals, the U.S. came from behind to capture gold with a 17-16 victory over unbeaten France in the gold medal game and finish a perfect 9-0.

“No, it never gets old ever,” said Diggins, who earned her fourth gold medal playing internationally for USA Basketball. “This is one of the most memorable definitely because it was the first time ever. We’ve all been talking about this, in 100 years they’re doing this in the Olympics, when we’re old, we can tell our kids that we were in the first one. When it’s added to the Olympics and things like that.”

Falling behind France 7-2 early on, the USA fought back with gritty defense and tough teamwork to claim the lead, 10-9, with less than five minutes to play. However, France put together a 4-0 run and was back in front 13-10 at 3:51. The U.S. put together a 5-0 run that saw Hartley tie the contest 13-all with a 2-pointer at 3:01 and hit the USA’s next two buckets and with 1:55 to play the Americans owned a 15-13 edge.

The teams swapped baskets and with nine seconds remaining, Ogwumike got a feed inside from Hartley to put the U.S. back up by two, 17-15. In an attempt to keep France from scoring, Hartley fouled her French counterpart and it was deemed an intentional foul. France hit the free throw for what was to be the final point of the game and got the ball back with two seconds on the clock. However, the USA’s defense kept France from getting a good look at the basket and the buzzer sounded with the U.S. in possession of the gold medal.

“Honestly, this might be the most precious gold medal because three-on-three makes the game so much more competitive,” said Ogwumike. “We had to work hard every step of the way. I don’t think we had an easy game at all. Every time I get on the medal stand I think it’s the best time, but honestly this was the best thing. We worked the hardest for it. Just four people trying to win a gold together, it was just amazing.

In addition to her women’s team gold medal, Diggins also claimed silver in the skills challenge.
