What was regarded early on as the most talented USA Basketball 3x3 World Championship Team in the three editions of the FIBA 3x3 World Championship, proved that it was indeed the best yet after finishing with a 6-1 record and a silver medal -- the USA’s first podium finish at the 3x3 Worlds -- Oct. 11-15 in Guangzhou, China. In doing so, the red, white and blue upped the USA’s all-time record at the event to 13-7.

Twenty teams took part in the men’s touranament, which was held in conjunction with the women’s 3x3 Worlds, and the weekend’s events also included a women’s skills contest, a mixed shootout and men’s dunk contest.

The 2016 USA 3x3 World Championship Team included former collegiate athletes Stefhon Hannah from University of Missouri, DePaul University recent standout Myke Henry, Kavon Lytch, who played at Oklahoma City University, and Alfonzo McKinnie from University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

The team earmed the right to represent the USA at the FIBA 3x3 World Championship after winning the 2016 USA Basketball 3x3 National Championship that was played Aug. 27-28 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Day 1 - October 11
With the hot hand in the USA’s 15-11 opening vitory against the Netherlands, Hannah scored the USA’s first six points on his way to 10 in the game.

In a 20-12 win against Turkey, Henry led the USA with nine points, while Hannah added seven. Leading 14-10 with 1:56 remaining, the USA compiled a 5-0 spurt expand its lead to 19-10 and cruised in for the win.

Day 2 - October 13
The USA put together a highlight-filled performance in its win over Japan. Starting the game off with an alley-oop dunk from Hannah to McKinnie, the USA led 5-2 just 1:33 into the game. Henry, who led the USA with 10 points, kicked off a 7-0 run that put the USA ahead 12-3 and continued to roll for the eventual 21-12 victory.

Against China, the USA jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, but China was within two points, 17-15, at 3:20. From there, the USA held China scoreless to finish off the game with a 21-15 win. Hannah led the U.S. with eight points.

Day 3 - October 15
After six lead changes and four knotted scores, the USA advanced out of the quarterfinal round with a tough 12-11 win over defending champs Qatar. Henry, who scored the go-ahead bucket with 1:12 to play, paced the U.S. with seven points.

The semifinal against Slovenia was another tight affair that featured five lead changes and three tied scores. With Slovenia up 14-12 with 2:50 to play, the Europeans went 0-of-4 from the line while Henry, who led the U.S. with nine points, notched a 3-0 run, which put the USA on top for good, 15-14, with 1:40 to play. The Americans held on for the win and advanced to the gold medal game.

As is expected whenever the USA faces Serbia on the court, the men’s gold medal game was hard foughts. The teams went back and forth for about the first six minutes of play until Serbia banked in a 2-pointer. That sparked a 5-0 run, putting the Serbs up 18-13 and the U.S. never recovered. McKennie drove to the basket to halt the run, but that was countered by a Serbian point at 3:12. Hannah drained a 2-pointer eight seconds later, but Duson Bulut, the tournament’s leading scorer (58 points) iced the win with Serbia’s fifth 2 of the game to give his team the gold.

Slovenia defeated Spain 17-16 for the bronze medal.Henry, who scored 50 points to finish second among the 80-athlete field, was named to the all-tournament team along with tournament MVP Bulut and Slovenia’s Gasper Ovnik.
