SECOND WOMEN'S GOODWILL GAMES -- 1990
Seattle, Washington - July 31 - August 5, 1990
The summer of 1990 was very good to the USA Basketball's women's national team. Not only did the USA capture gold at the World Championship in Malaysia, but the same team returned to the United States and captured the USA's second consecutive Goodwill Games title.

1990 GOODWILL GAMES FINAL STANDINGS

Coached by Rutgers University's successful head coach Theresa Grentz, the U.S. squad was an experienced lot that featured five former Olympians. Compiling an 8-0 record and the gold medal at the World Championship, the USA squad entered the Goodwill Games the heavy favorites to repeat as champions.
Riding a remarkable unbeaten streak in major international competitions that numbered 36 games, the U.S. struggled initially to return to the form they had exhibited nine days earlier at the World Championship. Struggling through the first 11:30 in its opener against South Korea, the U.S. outscored South Korea 30-8 over the first half's last 8:38 to take control 54-34 at halftime and went on to post a 94-70 victory. Internationally experienced USA star Teresa Edwards and Vickie Orr each tallied 19 points to lead the U.S. attack.
A match-up with the always dangerous Soviet Union loomed next, and the U.S. found itself trailing by eight at halftime 50-42. However, a 19-6 offensive spurt over the second half's first 8:21 pushed the U.S. to a 63-56 lead and the Soviets never got any closer as the Americans sailed on to an 86-78 win. 6'2' Katrina McClain had a monster game for the Americans, accounting for 23 points and 16 rebounds. Behind 16 points from Edwards and 15 from Medina Dixon, the U.S. rolled easily over Australia 103-80. Facing Bulgaria for the right to play in the gold medal contest, the U.S. pounded Bulgaria 106-67 as Edwards scored 19 points, and Lynette Woodard and Carolyn Jones both added 12 points.
The gold medal game featured a rematch with the Soviet Union. Starting strong, the U.S. grabbed a 10 point lead at halftime, 43-33. The determined USA team refused to let up and in the second half led by as many as 23 points before finally claiming an 82-70 win. Edwards led the U.S. charge with 16 points.
For the USA women, 1990 proved to be a truly 'golden' summer. They successfully defended their World Championship and Goodwill Games team titles, extended their international winning streak to 41 games, and reaffirmed that in the world of women's basketball, the United States, for at least another summer, stood as king of the hill.
