USA FIBA 50th ANNIVERSARY TEAM -- 1982
Geneva, Switzerland; Budapest, Hungary; Zagreb,
Zadar & Belgrade, Yugoslavia
June 18-27, 1982
Honoring the 50th anniversary of the formation of the International Basketball Federation, commonly known as FIBA, USA Basketball, then ABAUSA, fielded a team that competed against a European all-star team and played a three-game series with the Yugoslavia National Team.
1982 USA RESULTS (2-3)
|
Coached by eventual 1984 men's Olympic assistant coach and USA Basketball President (1992-1996) C.M. Newton then of Vanderbilt University, the promising young team featured eight players who went on to play in the NBA, including superstars Michael Jordan, John Paxson and Jeff Turner. In fact, the members of the 1982 FIBA Anniversary team, by 1997, played in the NBA for a combined total of 48 seasons.
Despite its promising future, the young USA team fell twice to the multi-national squad that featured players from Spain, Israel, France, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union. The European all-stars opened with a decisive 104-84 win in Geneva on June 18.
In their second meeting on June 20, the Europeans once again proved too much for the Americans when they claimed a 103-88 victory in front of a crowd of 9,000 in Budapest. Europe was led by Dragan Dalipagic of Yugoslavia with a game-high 21 points, Israel's Michael Berkowitz and the Soviet Union's Anatoly Myshkin with 14 each. The USA's campaign was headed up by Jordan with 19 points and Earl Jones with 15. Turner grabbed a USA best six rebounds.
Three-days later, the USA began to gel and edged out Yugoslavia by a single basket, 92-90, in Zadar, but Yugoslavia evened the count by taking a 93-92 heartbreaker on June 26 in Zagreb. Once again, Jordan paced the U.S. team, scoring 18 points as five U.S. players scored in double figures.
Ending on a victorious note, the USA closed-out its Yugoslavia tour on June 27 with an 88-83 win. Five American's posted double figure scoring, led by Jordan with 21 and followed by 14 from Jim Thomas.
