USA MEN'S SELECT TEAM -- 2007

  • Date:
    Sep 20, 2012

Las Vegas, Nevada - August 14-20, 2007

USA Basketball selected eight top young NBA players to comprise the 2007 USA Men's Select Team that was chosen to help prepare the 2007 USA Senior National Team for the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship that was held Aug. 22-Sept. 2, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Players named to the USA Basketball Select Team included: Aaron Brooks (Houston Rockets); Channing Frye (Portland Trail Blazers); Jeff Green (Seattle SuperSonics); Devin Harris (Dallas Mavericks); Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia 76ers); Al Jefferson (Minnesota Timberwolves); Jason Kapono (Toronto Raptors); and David Lee (New York Knicks).

First year Seattle SuperSonics head coach P.J. Carlesimo, who served as an assistant with the 1992 U.S. Olympic 'Dream Team' and who has been a head or assistant coach of five other USA Basketball teams, was head coach of the USA Select Team and he was assisted by Toronto Raptors assistant coach Jay Triano.

'By definition this is a select team, one primarily made up of young NBA players. We have the Rookie of the Month from the 2007 NBA Summer League in Aaron Brooks, we have the best 3-point shooter in the league last season in Kapono, and we have others whose NBA futures are very promising. Basically this select group are players we felt would give our senior national squad the best possible opportunity to prepare for the FIBA Americas Championship,' said USA Basketball Men?s Senior National Team managing director Jerry Colangelo.

These players, some of whom have been exposed to USA Basketball in the past and others who have not, by joining us get into the USA Basketball pipeline. Some of these players may have a great opportunity to be involved with the USA Basketball Senior National program in the next quad.

'P.J. Carlesimo will coach the USA Select Team and is a perfect fit because he has so much USA Basketball experience. His willingness to do this is very much appreciated especially since he just accepted the Seattle SuperSonics head coaching job.

'Jay Triano, a former coach of the Canadian national team and currently an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors, will be assisting. Jay is very familiar with the international game and its nuances and we?re pleased to have P.J. and Jay as our staff,' added Colangelo.

The USA Select squad began training Aug. 14 in Las Vegas and trained and scrimmaged against the USA Senior National Team between Aug. 15-20. The USA Senior National Team went on to post a 10-0 record to capture the gold medal and earn a qualifying berth for the U.S. men at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
