Returning for her second stint with this age group, Duke University head coach Joanne P. McCallie is now two-for-two in USA Basketball assignments, improving her record to 13-0 after she guided the U20 National Team to the 2006 gold medal at the FIBA Americas U20 Championship in Mexico City.

Australia, whose two setbacks came courtesy of the U.S., finished as the silver medalist, while France was third after defeating host Russia 67-61 in the bronze medal game.

Australia greeted the USA with its closest fight of the tournament in the team's July 29 opener, an eventual 90-88 USA win. The Australians staked as much as a 16-point advantage and held the lead until there were less than two minutes remaining. Candice Wiggins' 3-point play off a foul at the top of the key made the score 87-85 and put the USA ahead for the first time with 1:26 remaining. Wiggins' 30 points, coupled with Crystal Langhorne's 24 points and 16 rebounds helped their squad grind out the victory.

In direct response to the first game, the United States lept to a 38-6 lead against Brazil on the way to a 96-40 win. Langhorne again led the way with 19 points on a pristine 9-for-9 shooting performance.

The USA saw four players score in double figures, including 21 from Wiggins en route to a 93-70 win over Hungary on July 1. Led by Laura Harper's 13 points, all 12 players scored as the USA defeated Spain 81-62 on July 3. Continuing to gel, all U.S. players scored again in the 98-57 victory over Japan as Langhorne led the charge with 18 points on July 4 and the U.S. advanced to the quarterfinals with a perfect 5-0 slate.

A double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds from Paris and a 27-9 second-quarter outburst, followed by an 11-0 run to start the third frame punctuated a 104-53 USA quarterfinal blowout of Belgium on July 6 and launched the USA into a semifinal match-up with Russia.

The host Russian team scored 13 unanswered points to open the game, but another strong performance by Wiggins led the way for the USA in an 86-61 triumph on July 7. In 22 minutes, Wiggins scored 27 points that included four makes in six tries from 3-point range to set up a championship rematch with Australia.

A day later, much like the duo had done the first time the USA and Australia met in the championships opener, Langhorne (23 points and 14 rebounds) and Wiggins (14 points) helped the U.S. to capture the gold medal, as the USA started the game on a 15-3 run and later held off a final Australian attack in a 96-73 win.

Langhorne finished as the squad?s leading scorer (15.6 ppg.) and rebounder (8.9 rpg.), while Wiggins (13.1 ppg.), who would go on to capture her second gold of the summer at the Pan American Games, was second and Paris (10.9 ppg., 8.0 rpg.) rounded out the top threescorers and top two rebounders for the United States.
