Despite not medaling, the American women did achieve the most important goal, qualifying the country for the 1990 FIBA World Championship where the USA eventually went undefeated against the world's best to win the gold.

The U.S. opened competition with a strong 101-68 showing against Argentina on Aug. 6 and followed that with a 99-58 victory over the Dominican Republic on Aug. 7.

The USA dropped a one-point decision to Cuba on Aug. 8, 78-77, to close out preliminary round play.

Opening second round action facing Cuba, the U.S. fell to the islanders in back-to-back nights with another close match, 71-67.

Rebounding for a 93-70 victory over Canada on Aug. 11, the United States advanced to the semfinals and, as one of the top four teams in the tournament, also secured its berth to the 1990 FIBA World Championship.

Facing Brazil on Aug. 12 for the right to play in the gold medal game, the United States was stopped short by the hosts, 95-90.

Hoping to return with at least the bronze and facing a Canadian squad it had downed by 17 points just two days earlier, the USA's hopes were dashed as Canada exacted a 71-63 victory.

Cuba edged Brazil 87-84 for the gold medal.

Venus Lacey paced all U.S. scorers with 92 points, Medina Dixon scored 78, Andrea Stinson netted 67, Pauline Jordan had 54 and Franthea Price rounded out the USA's top scorers with 53 points.

Of the 12-member qualifying squad, Jennifer Azzi, Vicky Bullett, Medina Dixon and Vicki Hall would eventually be named to the 1990 USA World Championship Team, where they helped the U.S. win gold.
