Knowing the previous USA teams’ history and wanting to not only build upon that legacy but also create their own, the 2013 squad headed to Uruguay with two goals in mind: capture gold and not lose a game in the process.

Running to a 10-0 lead against an undersized Mexican squad, the U.S. had 29 assists on 56 field goals en route to a 130-31 victory to open the tournament. The 130 points was the most any USA team had scored in a U16 championship and tied Argentina’s 130-point output in 2011 for the overall tournament high-water mark. All 12 players scored in the game, led by Diamond Stone’s 20 points.

Next up was South American rival Argentina, but a 16-0 USA run to open the game quickly established no doubt as to which team was stronger as the U.S. earned the 96-72 win behind 21 points from Malik Newman. Unfortunately Harry Giles suffered a left knee injury early in the game and was sidelined for the rest of the tournament.

Meeting up against winless Bahamas in its third game, the red, white and blue quickly established its dominance and rolled to a 59-28 halftime lead before easing in for the 121-52 win. Again all available players scored, led by 26 points on 11-of-13
shooting from Newman.

The USA faced Puerto Rico in the semis for the right to advance to the gold medal game. Despite a sluggish first quarter, which saw the North Americans trail for the first time in four games, the U.S., behind 19 points apiece from Ivan Rabb and Stone, earned a convincing 93-64 victory over the islanders to set up a rematch with Argentina for the gold.

Behind a decimating 28-7 second quarter, the USA accomplished exactly what it set out to do, vanquished all comers, and beat Argentina 94-48 in the championship game to remain undefeated, en route to collecting gold at the 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship. All 11 players put up points, and this time it was Josh Jackson who led with 16.

Newman, who averaged team-highs of 16.2 points and 2.8 steals a game, was named tournament MVP.

Canada collected its third-straight U16 bronze medal after defeating Puerto Rico 93-64.
