The USA’s 112.6 points per game scoring average was led by eventual tournament MVP Vern Carey Jr.’s 14.0 ppg., and the U.S. squad featured a total of five athletes with double-digit scoring averages and three more who scored at least 9.0 ppg.

Opening with a 110-69 victory over Puerto Rico on June 14, Carey led the team with team-highs of 17 points and nine rebounds as all 12 U.S. athletes scored.

A 94-45 victory over Dominican Republic on June 15 secured the USA’s berth into the 2018 FIBA U17 World Cup and a spot in the medal semifinals. The Americans led from wire-to-wire and were led by 15 points and 10 rebounds from James Wiseman as six USA team members scored in double digits.

Nine U.S. athletes scored in double figures, led by Zion Harmon’s 17 points and five assists, as the USA put on a clinic against Mexico for a 127-52 victory on June 16.

Shooting a sizzling 60.0 percent on the night and racing to a 71-21 halftime lead, the USA took down host Argentina 121-49 on June 17, setting up a North American gold medal contest against also-unbeaten Canada. All 12 members of the USA squad got on the scoreboard, led by Scottie Barnes’ game-high 20 points and six of the USA U16 men’s record 26 steals. He also set a USA U16 record by hitting a perfect 8-of-8 from the line.

Behind 19 points, five rebounds and four assists from Carey, the USA rolled to a 111-60 win over Canada to claim the FIBA Americas U16 Championship gold medal on June 18.

Holding Canada to just 29.6 percent shooting from the field, the USA shot a red-hot 60.0 percent from the field and saw six players finish in double-digit scoring.

Canada was the only team over the five-game tournament that managed to gain a lead on the USA, and held it for fewer than three minutes. After Canada moved ahead with an early 6-3 edge, the USA took the lead for good on a Wendell Moore Jr. steal and layup that put the red, white and blue in the lead for good, 7-6. After owning a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter, the USA dominated the second quarter 23-8 for a virtually insurmountable 49-24 halftime lead.

While the USA just missed breaking its U16 men’s record for most points scored in a tournament by two points – the USA U16 men scored 565 points in 2009 – it did eclipse several other of the USA U16 men’s records. New high-water USA U16 men’s marks also include highest field goal percentage (.568), most free throws made (100) and highest free throw percentage (.704).

Puerto Rico earned its first medal of any type at the event after defeating Argentina 78-67 in the bronze medal game.
