Third FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Women - 2013

  • Date:
    Jun 11, 2014

Cancun, Mexico - June 19-23, 2013

As the 2013 USA Basketball Women's U16 National Team prepared to take on the competition in the 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Women from June 19-23 in Cancun, Mexico, the legacy of the U.S. women's stellar 10-0 record at the event meant any loss would have been a disappointment for the USA. The team not only lived up to those expectations, it cruised past five opponents en route to the gold medal by an incredible margin of 63.8 points per game.

“They were great,” USA head coach Sue Phillips (Archbishop Mitty H.S./San Jose Cagers AAU, Calif.) said of her team after winning the gold medal. “They are great young women, and that's a testament to their parents and their upbringing.”

Twenty points from eventual tournament MVP Asia Durr (St. Pius X Catholic H.S./Douglasville, Ga.) led the USA past Brazil 76-20 in its opening game on June 19. Katie Lou Samuelson (Mater Dei H.S./Huntington Beach, Calif.) added nine points and six rebounds, while De'Janae Boykin (Charles H. Flowers H.S./Springdale, Md.) had eight points and six rebounds and Lauren Cox (Flower Mound H.S./Flower Mound, Texas) had seven points and eight boards.

Against Argentina the following day, the USA led comfortably at halftime before outscoring Argentina 38-6 in the third quarter to blow the game wide open on its way to a 98-28 win. Durr again led the red, white and blue with 23 points and six rebounds, and she made 7-of-10 from the free throw line to set a USA U16 record for free throws attempted. Additionally, the USA’s 30 3-point attempts established a USA U16 single-game team high. Crystal Dangerfield (Blackman H.S./Murfreesboro, Tenn.) shot 7-of-9 from the field to add 16 points; Arike Ogunbowale (Divine Savior Holy Angels H.S./Milwaukee, Wisc.) contributed 15 points; Boykin finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds; and Samuelson added 11 points and eight rebounds. Once again using various trapping and pressure defenses, the USA overwhelmed its opponent, forcing Argentina into 24 turnovers.

Capitalizing on its depth and size, the USA overpowered Costa Rica for a lopsided 106-19 win. Holding Costa Rica to just eight made field goals for the entire game, the U.S. offense featured seven players in double-digit scoring. Samuelson led the USA with 20 points, including 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point, and eight rebounds.

The USA took control of its semifinal contest against host Mexico in the first quarter and never looked back, sailing in for a 101-29 win to advance to the gold medal game. Three players finished with 16 points, including Samuelson; Cox, who added eight rebounds; and Ogunbowale, who collected four steals.

In a battle of undefeated teams that saw the game tied 27-all at halftime, the USA rode a 31-7 third quarter to an eventual 82-48 win over Canada, capturing the gold medal with conviction. With the USA leading by one point at 8:44 in the third, a 12-0 run by Durr alone was the start of a 22-0 span that secured the game’s momentum for the USA. Durr finished the gold-medal game with three USA U16 single-game records, including 26 points, eight steals and 22 field-goals attempted, and she tied the mark for field-goals made with nine. Additionally, Samuelson shot 8-of-8 from deep to set USA U16 records for 3-pointers made and percentage on her way to 24 points; while Cox barely missed a triple-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds and a USA U16 single-game record nine blocked shots. Further, the USA established a team record for 3-point attempts with 30 tries from deep.

In the bronze medal game, Brazil beat host Mexico 70-56. The tournament’s top four finishers, the USA, Canada, Brazil and Mexico all qualified for the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship.

For the tournament, the USA led the field in 16 of 19 statistical categories and set nine USA U16 competition records. Durr set USA U16 competition records for points averaged (18.4), field goals made (31), free throws made (19) and free throws attempted (26); and Samuelson now owns USA U16 competition records for 3-pointers made (18) and attempted (34) and 3-point percentage (.529). Further, the team’s 47 made and 111 attempted 3-pointers were USA U16 records, while its 49.0 percent shooting from the field and 42.3 percent from 3-point tied U.S. highs.

The U.S. women are now 15-0 at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship with three-straight gold medals in the three U16 tournaments that have been played.
