Home court advantage and a roster filled out by the country’s top basketball talent was more than enough to pave the way to a dominating USA showing and gold medal finish at the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship.

Held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the USA steamrolled the opposition and compiled a 5-0 record to claim the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 title and also qualify for the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship.

Stanley Johnson was named the U18 Championship’s MVP after averaging a USA-best 14.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.2 steals a game.

The USA, which trailed for just 4:05 throughout its five games, finished the eight-team tournament ranked No. 1 in most major statistical categories, including scoring offense, scoring defense (60.6 ppg.), field goal percentage (.538), defensive field goal percentage (.316), defensive 3-point field goal percentage (.237), rebounding (52.6 rpg.) rebounding defense (34.6 rpg.), rebounding margin (+18.0), blocked shots (40), assists (114), steals (68), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.73), turnover margin (+10.6), offensive rebounds (18.4), defensive rebounds (34.2) and 3-point field goals made (7.8).

The 12-member 2014 USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team featured seven players boasting of prior USA Basketball experience, and the coaching staff featured USA head coach and University of Florida head coach Billy Donovan, who led the 2012 U18 and 2013 U19 USA National Teams to gold medals and a combined 14-0 record. Assisting Donovan along the USA sideline were collegiate head coaches Ed Cooley of Providence College and Sean Miller of the University of Arizona.

Led by Luke Kennard’s game-high 30 points on 7-of-12 shooting from 3-point, the USA exploded offensively and cruised to a 156-58 victory over Uruguay in its opener. The offensive showing set five USA U18 records, including USA team records for most points scored, largest margin of victory (98 points), most field goals made (59), most team assists (40) and most assists by an individual after Jalen Brunson dished out 13. Further, Kennard tied the USA’s U18 record for most 3-point attempts.

Led by Johnson’s 18 points, eight USA players scored eight or more points, including five in double digits, and the U.S. downed Mexico 100-46.

Leading start-to-finish, the USA earned a lopsided 118-64 victory over Argentina to close preliminary round play as Brunson paced the way with 16 points.

Downing Dominican Republic 90-56 to advance to the gold medal contest, USA Basketball veterans Johnson and Tyus Jones combined for 29 points, eight assists and five steals to lead the way.

In its most competitive game of the tournament, the USA earned a convincing 113-79 victory over Canada to claim the 2014 FIBA Americas Championship gold medal. USA team captains, Johnson, Jones and Winslow, combined for 47 points, 17 rebounds, nine assists and six steals.
