Kansas State University acclaimed head coach Bruce Weber led the American team to gold. Weber was assisted on the sidelines by college coaches Mike Hopson (Washington) and LeVelle Moton (North Carolina Central). The USA team featured five players who had one season of college basketball under their belts, and seven players who played in high school in 2018-19. The average age of the squad was 18.08 years of age.

Behind a 20-point performance from Reggie Perry and 16 points from Scottie Barnes, the USA raced past New Zealand 111-71 in the opening game of the 2019 U19 World Cup. The USA forced 26 turnovers and scored 40 points in transition in a hard-fought 102-84 win over Lithuania as Cade Cunningham and Tyrese Haliburton each finished with 21 points in the win. Behind a balanced scoring effort that featured six players in double digit scoring, including a game-high 14 points from Jalen Green and Jalen Suggs, the U.S. rolled to an 87-58 victory over Senegal to improve to 3-0 and earn the No. 1 seed out of Group A for the round of 16.

Six players scored in double digits as the USA dismantled Latvia 116-66 in the round of 16. Trevion Williams posted a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds and Cunningham tallied 11 points and a USA U19 single-game record 10 assists to lead the USA’s winning effort.

The USA jumped on Russia right from the start and took a 51-27 lead at the midway point. Russia fought back to close within nine points near the end of the third quarter, 66-57, however, the USA regained control and opened a 79-60 lead and went on to lead by as many as 25 points in the fourth quarter before earning a 95-80 win. Perry made 10-of-15 shots to lead the USA with 28 points, while adding eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.

A 15-0 run early in the third quarter was a turning point for the USA in its 102-67 semifinal win over Lithuania. Green finished with 18 points; Suggs added 15 points and six steals, and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Facing the surprise team of the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup for the gold medal, the first half was a tightly contested game and the the USA led Mali 42-40 after a back-and-forth first half. The red, white and blue opened the third period with a 12-0 run that became a 17-2 stretch that pushed the lead to 59-42 with 5:42 left in the third quarter. Mali did not get closer than seven points for the remainder of the game as the USA went on to post a 93-79 victory. Cunningham paced the USA in the gold medal victory with 21 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Suggs scored 15 points to go with five rebounds; Robinson-Earl scored 13 points and added  seven boards and Barnes finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.

Perry, who led the USA in scoring and rebounding averaging 13.1 points and 7.9 rebounds a game, was named MVP of the tournament. Joining Perry on the five-member all-tournament team was U.S. teammate Tyrese Haliburton, who posted 7.9 points and team-high 6.9 assists a game.

"Obviously, it’s a real honor and I think our players appreciate it too," said Weber about capturing the gold. "When the national anthem starts playing and you have a gold medal on, it’s special. I know it brought a little bit of tears to me. You’re just so proud to be part of it.

"Our guys have been great since day one, they bought in. Everybody said we played hard, but it was them that played hard, and man they played hard. When we shared the ball and played hard, and played good defense, we were unstoppable."
