Featuring the youngest USA U19 team in the history of the event, 18.08 years of age, the USA squad was tested in its final two games and made the necessary plays to earn the world title.

The U.S. cruised through its three preliminary round games, winning by an average of 31.3 points a game. Opening against Iran, behind a 20 point and 10 rebound showing by Josh Jackson the USA posted an 83-53 win. Facing Croatia the following day, the U.S. ran its way to a decisive 103-81 win as Jayson Tatum poured in 22 points. Closing out preliminary round play versus Egypt, Harry Giles, Caleb Swanigan and Tatum each contributed 13 points as the Americans stormed to a 92-50 win.

Advancing to the Round of 16 and facing familiar foe Argentina, balanced scoring and a dominating defensive performance paved the way to a lopsided 93-45 USA victory. Giles’ double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds paced the USA, while also aiding the USA’s cause were Tatum with 14 points, and Allonzo Trier tossed in 13 points.

Jalen Brunson made all three of his 3-point attempts and finished with 17 points, while Giles and Jackson contributed 14 points each, as the USA improved to 5-0 and advanced to medal round semifinals after disposing of Italy 86-65 in its quarterfinals match-up.

Facing host Greece and playing in front of a sold-out and raucous Greek crowd, Brunson scored a game-high 30 points, and the USA made the big plays when needed as it advanced to the FIBA U19 World Championship gold medal game after out-battling host Greece 82-76. Brunson’s scoring outburst was the fourth highest single game scoring effort in USA U19 history. Giles finished with his fourth-straight double-double, recording 13 points and 11 rebounds, Terrance Ferguson and Tatum each added 11 points.

Following 40 competitive minutes which ended in a 67-67 tie, the USA rolled in the five minutes of overtime and outscored upset-minded Croatia 12-4 to earn a hard-fought 79-71 win in the gold medal game. Ten USA players contributed points in the victory, and Brunson, who finished with a team-high seven assists, while not committing a turnover, scored all 14 points of his U.S.-high in the second half and overtime. Giles contributed his fifth-consecutive double-double, finishing with 13 points and 16 rebounds, Tatum added 13 points and six rebounds, and Jackson contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.

"No question, we had to fight through miscues," said Sean Miller. "Really I thought we probably shot more inside shots than we did the entire tournament, but they didn’t fall. But to our team’s credit, we stayed with it, we preserved, we got defensive stops and I thought our effort level in overtime really reflects a lot about the character of our team. We were at our best when it mattered the most.

"It’s an incredible experience," Miller added about the gold medal showing. "First of all you’re representing the USA, and we all know what that means. But you also represent everybody in the USA in terms of basketball – coaches, players alike. So you have great responsibility, a lot of pressure on your shoulders to deliver. I’m really happy for our staff. We worked hard together for 23 days, and our players and everybody associated with it – job well done and we feel good. We’re headed home now with the gold!"

Brunson, who finished averaging 14.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and team-highs of 5.6 assists and 2.1 steals a game, was named the Most Valuable Player of the FIBA U19 World Championship .and Giles, who averaged a double-double of 14.0 points and 10.6 rebounds a game, was named to the all-tournament team.

Among the 16 national teams, the USA ranked No. 1 in scoring offense, field goal percentage, field goal defense and was second in scoring defense, third in 3-point field goal percentage.
