Led by University of Kentucky head coach John Calipari, the USA roster featured six collegians and six high school standouts. The average age of the squad was 18.08 years of age.
The U.S. breezed through its three preliminary-round games by a winning average of 44.6 points a game.
Opening against Iran and posting a decisive 108-48 win, the effort was paced by Hamidou Diallo’s 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor, while Carsen Edwards drained 3-of-4 3-point shots and contributed 15 points. Overpowering Angola 109-68, the USA contingent was led by double-double performances from Josh Okogie and Austin Wiley. Okogie finished the game with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Wiley tallied 16 points and 16 rebounds. Closing out preliminary round play with a 98-65 win over previously undefeated Italy, the USA was led by 20 points from PJ Washington and 15 from Cameron Reddish.
Mali was no challenge in the Round of 16 as the USA fought its way to a 117-69 victory. For a second consecutive game, Washington paced the potent USA offense against Mali with 20 points, and Brandon McCoy worked his way to a double-double, finishing with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
Behind a defense that wreaked havoc in the second half and a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double by Wiley, the USA battled its way to an 81-59 quarterfinal victory over Germany.
The USA’s pursuit of a third-consecutive FIBA U19 World Cup men's title came to an end in the semifinals, when Canada handed the USA a 99-87 loss. The USA efforts were paced by PJ Washington, who finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Payton Pritchard added 16 points and Wiley scored 13 points and grabbed a USA U19 single-game record-tying 17 rebounds. Canada’s 99 points were the most given up by a USA team since the 2011 U19 World Cup, when Lithuania scored 105 in a 107-105 overtime loss to the USA. Canada was led to its win by 6-foot-7 guard R.J. Barrett, who exploded for 38 points.
Making 12-of-19 3s for the game, including 5-of-8 3s in the game’s opening quarter, the USA quickly distanced itself from Spain and sprinted on to a 96-72 victory in the bronze medal game. It was another balanced USA offensive effort that featured scoring from all 12 players. Edwards tallied 13 points, Pritchard finished with 12 points, Immanuel Quickly added 11 points and Reddish tossed in 10 points.
USA guard Payton Pritchard was selected to the five-member FIBA U19 World Cup All-Tournament Team.
