Led by tournament MVP Caitlin Clark, who averaged team-highs of 15.2 ppg and 5.2 apg. over the seven games, the USA also was paced to gold by Sonia Citron, who averaged USA second-bests of 14.2 ppg. and 7.7 rpg., and joined Clark on the FIBA U19 All-Star Five.
In its opening game on Aug. 7, the USA saw all 12 players score in a 96-37 wire-to-wire win over Italy. The Americans were led by Citron, who chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds, and Jewel Spear, who scored 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point.
A 17-0 run in the second quarter helped spur the USA to a 99-59 win over Australia on Aug. 8. Clark had a near triple-double with 24 points, nine rebounds and a team-high seven assists and Lauren Betts tallied a double-double with 17 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
The U.S. wrapped up preliminary play with a decisive 97-36 win over Egypt on Aug. 10. Azzi Fudd led the Americans from the tip, scoring the first eight points of the game and finishing with 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field, five assists and three steals. Citron recorded 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.
Nine of the USA’s 11 players recorded double-digit scoring efforts in the round of 16 contest on Aug. 11, as Payton Verhulst paced the USA with a team-high 18 points in a lopsided and record-breaking 129-45 win over Taiwan. The USA scored its 129 points on 38 assists, breaking the USA women’s U19 record for assists in a game, as well as tying the record for total points in a USA women’s U19 game.
In the Aug. 13 quarterfinals match-up with Spain, the USA got out to a 15-point lead at halftime and never looked back, securing a 98-64 win to advance to the semifinals. Clark finished with 17 points and Betts contributed 16 points.
An 8-0 run at both the end of the first and second quarters helped the USA to a 20-point advantage heading into the locker room in its semifinal game against host Hungary on Aug. 14. The Americans cruised in the second half en route to a 75-42 win and advanced the USA to a ninth-straight gold medal game. Citron led the USA with 17 points, while Clark and Diamond Johnson each had 14 points.
The USA captured its gold medal off a strong defensive effort that helped propel the Americans to a 70-52 gold medal victory over Australia on Aug. 15. Johnson led the U.S. with 15 points while Te-Hina Paopao added 10 points.
Hungary earned its first U19 medal after earning an 88-67 victory over Mali in the bronze medal game.
Also named to the all-tournament team were Hungary’s Julia Boros, Mali’s Sika Kone and Australia’s Jade Melbourne.
