Behind the leadership of USA head coach Cori Close, the USA won its second-straight U19 gold medal at the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup in Debrecen, Hungary. The USA has now won eight of the past nine women’s U19 gold medals since 2005.

Led by tournament MVP Caitlin Clark, who averaged team-highs of 15.2 ppg and 5.2 apg. over the seven games, the USA also was paced to gold by Sonia Citron, who averaged USA second-bests of 14.2 ppg. and 7.7 rpg., and joined Clark on the FIBA U19 All-Star Five.

In its opening game on Aug. 7, the USA saw all 12 players score in a 96-37 wire-to-wire win over Italy. The Americans were led by Citron, who chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds, and Jewel Spear, who scored 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point.

A 17-0 run in the second quarter helped spur the USA to a 99-59 win over Australia on Aug. 8. Clark had a near triple-double with 24 points, nine rebounds and a team-high seven assists and Lauren Betts tallied a double-double with 17 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.

The U.S. wrapped up preliminary play with a decisive 97-36 win over Egypt on Aug. 10. Azzi Fudd led the Americans from the tip, scoring the first eight points of the game and finishing with 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field, five assists and three steals. Citron recorded 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.

Nine of the USA’s 11 players recorded double-digit scoring efforts in the round of 16 contest on Aug. 11, as Payton Verhulst paced the USA with a team-high 18 points in a lopsided and record-breaking 129-45 win over Taiwan. The USA scored its 129 points on 38 assists, breaking the USA women’s U19 record for assists in a game, as well as tying the record for total points in a USA women’s U19 game.

In the Aug. 13 quarterfinals match-up with Spain, the USA got out to a 15-point lead at halftime and never looked back, securing a 98-64 win to advance to the semifinals. Clark finished with 17 points and Betts contributed 16 points.

An 8-0 run at both the end of the first and second quarters helped the USA to a 20-point advantage heading into the locker room in its semifinal game against host Hungary on Aug. 14. The Americans cruised in the second half en route to a 75-42 win and advanced the USA to a ninth-straight gold medal game. Citron led the USA with 17 points, while Clark and Diamond Johnson each had 14 points.

The USA captured its gold medal off a strong defensive effort that helped propel the Americans to a 70-52 gold medal victory over Australia on Aug. 15. Johnson led the U.S. with 15 points while Te-Hina Paopao added 10 points.

Hungary earned its first U19 medal after earning an 88-67 victory over Mali in the bronze medal game.

Also named to the all-tournament team were Hungary’s Julia Boros, Mali’s Sika Kone and Australia’s Jade Melbourne.
