After falling to host China in the semifinal match of the 21st World University Games, the 2001 USA Basketball men's team rebounded to claim the bronze medal and finish with a 7-1 record after defeating Germany 80-78.

The U.S. squad outscored its opponents by 30.0 points a game (102.9 ppg. to 72.9 ppg.), while also posting a 10.4 rpg. rebounding margin (40.5 rpg. to 30.1 rpg.) over its opponents. Leading the USA's potent offense, which saw six players average in double digits for scoring, were Juan Dixon and Lonny Baxter, who averaged 19.3 and 15.0 points a game, respectively. Roger Mason, Jr. averaged 13.0 ppg., Melvin Ely scored 10.5 ppg., Lynn Greer averaged 10.4 ppg., and Chris Owens added 10.3 ppg. Baxter and Ely, who swatted a team high 11 shots, each averaged 6.3 rebounds per outing.
Opening with a 112-50 victory over Iran on Aug. 22, the U.S. finished with three players scoring in double digits, including Baxter, who notched a game high 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field.
After opening a 58-30 halftime advantage, behind 19 points apiece from Dixon and Ely the USA earned a 118-56 victory over South Africa on Aug. 23.
Dixon scored 20 points to lead six players in double digits as the USA ran away with a 113-90 victory over Turkey on Aug. 24 to close preliminary play on top of Group B.
Playing in the quarterfinals medal round, the USA rolled over South American rivals Brazil 99-67 on Aug. 26 as Baxter, Dixon and Greer were credited with a combined 47 points and 14 steals.
With the help of 21 points from Dixon and 20 more from Mason the United States came back from a 20-14 first quarter deficit to earn a 91-62 win over previously unbeaten Great Britain on Aug. 27.
Behind a USA World University Games single game record 32 points from Owens, the USA ran away with a 128-97 victory over South Korea on Aug. 28 and advanced to the medal semifinals against also undefeated host China.
Fighting back from an 11-point deficit late in the game, the U.S. missed a pair of shots with less than 10 seconds to go and was edged by host China 83-82 in the medal semifinal game on Aug. 30. The United States received a 24-point effort from Dixon and the disappointing loss ended the USA's 46-game winning streak at the World University Games.
Not willing to go home empty handed, the U.S. rebounded from its semifinal loss to earn an 80-78 bronze medal win over Germany on Aug. 31. Dixon poured in 24 points and Barrett dropped a pair of free throws with 12.2 seconds to go to help lead the U.S. squad past the Germans and onto the medal stand.
Yugoslavia dominated China 101-61 for the gold medal.
