TWENTY-THIRD WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES -- 2005
With dominant, unselfish play and an unblemished 8-0 record, the 2005 USA Men's World University Games Team took home the gold medal at the 2005 World University Games held Aug. 12-21 in Izmir, Turkey. With the gold, the U.S., which was led by Villanova University (Pa.) head coach Jay Wright, won its 13th overall in 18 competitions and upped its record to a stunning 125-7 (.947 winning percentage).

The U.S. rolled through the preliminary rounds with a 5-0 record, its margin of victory never less than 10 points. Opening with a 94-47 victory over Iran on Aug. 12, the squad was paced by 13 points from Mike Gansey. The USA then received 23 points from Craig Smith as it surpassed Slovakia 85-70 on Aug. 13. Seeing its closest margin of victory on Aug. 14, Smith and Shelden Williams poured in 20 points apiece as the U.S. downed Germany 72-62.
Following a day off, the United States breezed past China 117-61 on Aug. 16 with the help of 24 points from Eric Hicks. Capping preliminary play with an 87-51 trouncing of the Czech Republic on Aug. 17, the U.S. was paced by Williams' 16 points.
After rolling past Australia 88-68 in the quarterfinals on Aug. 18 with the help of 18 points from Randy Foye, the U.S. overcame a sluggish start to roar past Russia 120-80 in the semifinals to reach the gold medal game. Played on Aug. 19, the USA's semifinal victory came thanks in part to the tandem of Foye and Williams, each of whom scored 20 points, while Williams' 10 rebounds produced his second double-double of the WUGs to that point.
Smith led the gold medal charge on Aug. 21 with 16 points and was aided by a 15-point, 14-rebound effort by Williams as the United States earned an 85-70 win over Ukraine in the title game.
Serbia & Montenegro grabbed the bronze medal with a 86-77 victory over Russia.
The USA averaged a tournament-best 93.5 ppg. and had four players average double digits, led by Williams' 14.9 ppg. Smith poured in a team second-best 13.9 ppg., Foye added 12.6 ppg. and Vincent Grier notched 11.1 ppg. Smith shot a healthy 66.7 percent from the floor, followed closely by Williams' 62.0 percent from the field. Williams also led the team with 9.3 rpg., while Greg Brunner grabbed 5.8 rpg. and Smith took down 5.4 rpg. Grier nabbed 3.3 spg., Williams 2.6 spg. and Foye 2.5 spg. Williams rejected 2.3 bpg. and Matt Haryasz averaged a team second-best 1.3 bpg.
