The 2001 USA Basketball Women's World University Games Team rebounded from an early loss to defeat host China 87-69 and claim the gold medal and finish with a 7-1 record.

The USA finished the tournament with three players averaging in double figures for scoring led by Ayana Walker's 15.4 ppg. Shereka Wright averaged 14.5 ppg. and Kara Lawson averaged 12.0 ppg.
Walker, who also led the team in rebounding with 8.6 rpg., set a USA World University Games record for most rebounds in one game with 19 against China in the gold medal clash. Assisting Walker on the boards were Wright and Chantelle Anderson who averaged 5.3 rpg. and 4.7 rpg. respectively.
The United States averaged 89.3 points per game and held its opponents to 62.0 ppg., and also outrebounded opponents by a 9.3 margin, recording 34.3 rpg. to its foes' 25.0 rpg.
Walker scored 27 points to lead the USA in its 134-37 defeat of South Africa as competition got underway on Aug. 22.
The next day, despite receiving 14 points, nine rebounds and three steals from Walker, the USA women fell to Canada 68-67.
In a must win position if medal hopes were to be kept alive, the Americans closed out preliminary round play on Aug. 25 with a 106-66 victory over Japan behind 25 points from Lawson. The victory earned the U.S. one of eight spots in the medal round quarterfinals. The USA set two World University Games single game records against Japan by recording 13 made 3-pointers and shooting 69.6 percent (39-56 FGs) from the field.
In its first quarterfinal matchup, the U.S. stormed back from a 12 point deficit at halftime to upset unbeaten Russia by 11, 79-68 on Aug. 27. Anderson and Wright tallied 15 points and six rebounds apiece, while Cori Enghusen added 13 points.
Led by Jenny Roulier, the USA seized back the lead in the second half to claim an 89-78 victory over undefeated China on Aug. 28. Wright scored a game high 23 points, while Walker recorded the game's only double-double with 17 points and a game high 12 rebounds.
On Aug. 29 the USA wrapped up quarterfinal round action by defeating Brazil 82-62 and advanced to the medal semifinals. The team was led by 13 points from Enghusen and Caton Hill's 12 points, five rebounds and three steals.
Controlling its semifinal game from start to finish, the USA easily defeated Lithuania 70-49 on Aug. 30 to earn a spot in the gold medal game. Four USA players scored in double digits including Walker with 15, Lindsey Yamasaki with 13, Lawson with 11 and Roulier with 10.
Despite playing in front of 18,000 partisan fans, the United States triumphed 87-69 over China to earn the gold medal on Aug. 31. At the end of the first ten minutes, the U.S. held a 25-21 lead. China cut the USA's lead to 25-24 to start the second quarter, but that is as close as they would come. Leading 45-41 at halftime, the USA lead stood at 65-58 at the end of the third quarter. The squad was led by Wright's 22 points and nine rebounds and Walker's 19 points and 19 rebounds.
