USA Basketball Social Roundup: Congrats From One MVP To Another

  • Date:
    Oct 21, 2014

Check out some of the people and organizations USA Basketball is following with this week’s USA Basketball Social Roundup:

Just over a month removed from their triumphant performances at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain, Derrick Rose and Kyrie Irving were in midseason form in a Monday night preseason game. Rose scored 30 for the Chicago Bulls and Irving, MVP of the World Cup, scored 28 for the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs prevailed, 107-98.

A little motivation from Sue Phillips, who led the USA Basketball Women’s U17 World Championship Team to gold in the Czech Republic last July. Phillips, who is the head coach at Archbishop Mitty H.S. in San Jose, California, will be the featured expert on USAB.com this week – submit your questions for her via Twitter using the hashtag #AskCoachSue.

While Kevin Durant is rehabbing his broken foot, the NBA’s reigning MVP took some time to acknowledge the NFL’s reigning MVP for setting the NFL’s career record for passing touchdowns on Sunday.

---

Durant wasn’t the only one chiming in on Manning’s accomplishment. Here’s what Caleb Swanigan, a member of the gold medalist USA Basketball Men’s U17 World Championship Team, thinks about the debate over who’s better – Manning or Tom Brady. Of course, Swanigan is from Fort Wayne, Indiana, so he might be bias toward the former Indianapolis Colt.

USA Basketball Women’s National Team member Angel McCoughtry is a good follow on Instagram. She recently posted this pic from the Oct. 3 quarterfinal win over France. Two days after that, the USA defeated Spain to win its second consecutive FIBA World Championship.

Okay, the photo is a little blurry, but this is Terrance Ferguson, a member of the USA Basketball Men’s U17 World Championship Team that captured gold this summer at the FIBA U17 World Championship in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Ferguson’s teammate on the USA Men’s U17 World Championship Team, Malik Newman, who was named MVP of the FIBA U17 World Championship, is up for shooting baskets any time of the day or night. He also likes his emojis.

After winning two gold medals this year – first as head coach of the USA Basketball Women’s U18 National Team at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship and then as assistant coach for the USA at the FIBA World Championship, the great Dawn Staley is gearing up for her full-time job as head coach of the University of South Carolina women’s basketball team.
