Twitterverse Reacts To Kobe Bryant's NBA Milestone

  • Date:
    Dec 16, 2014

Check out some of the people and organizations USA Basketball is following with this week’s USA Basketball Social Media Roundup:

Social media was just one of many outlets for congratulatory notes that poured in Sunday night, when two-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist Kobe Bryant passed Michael Jordan for third on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. While Twitter shout-outs came from the likes of Magic Johnson, Yasiel Puig and Snoop Dogg, here’s one from Bryant’s former Lakers teammate Pau Gasol, who also competed against Bryant in the Olympics as a member of Spain’s national team.

--- How did USA Basketball gold medalist Jahlil Okafor celebrate his 19th birthday? On the court, of course. The Duke freshman, who has won four golds with USA Basketball and was MVP of the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship, led the Blue Devils to a 75-62 win over Elon Monday night with 25 points and a school freshman-record 20 rebounds.

---

Toronto Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan, a member of the USA Men’s National Team that took gold at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, has been out with an injured groin. That gave him this opportunity to work on a possible future career as a broadcaster when his playing days are over.

---

Sue Bird happens to be the most decorated FIBA World Championship athlete in history, male or female, having now won three golds (2002, 2010, 2014) and one bronze medal (2006). As the WNBA’s Twitter account was nice enough to point out, Bird has had unprecedented success as a pro as well.

Last week we had a post in this space from 2014 USA U18 National Team gold medalist Stephen Zimmerman. This week, Zimmermann gets a mention from his U18 teammate Chase Jeter, who also happens to be Zimmermann’s teammate at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada.
