Shout-Outs For Thompson's Big Night, Coach K's Milestone and More

  • Date:
    Jan 28, 2015

Check out some of the people and organizations USA Basketball is following with this week’s USA Basketball Social Media Roundup:

There was plenty of buzz on social media last Friday when Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors set an NBA record with 37 points in the third quarter of a win again Sacramento. Thompson, who helped the USA win gold as a member of the 2014 World Cup Team, took to Twitter himself to thank his teammates.

One of Thompson’s teammates is Harrison Barnes, who posted this video showing how the Warriors celebrated Thompson’s achievement. Barnes, who played for the USA Junior National Select Team in the 2010 Nike Hoop Summit, was also a teammate of Thompson’s at the 2013 USA Basketball Men’s National Team mini-camp.

Most of the members of the 2014 USA Men’s World Cup Team took to social media to congratulate their coach, Mike Krzyzewski, when he won his 1,000th collegiate game Sunday. Despite this post from James Harden, the Houston Rockets guard was not technically “part of Coach K’s 1,000 wins” (Harden played for Arizona State University). Harden was, however, part of Coach K’s wins at the 2014 World Cup and the 2012 Olympics.

It’s not all that warm in Istanbul, Turkey, where Angel McCoughtry is currently playing for Fenerbahce of the EuroLeague, but that didn’t stop the five-time USA Basketball gold medalist (most recently at the 2014 FIBA World Championship) from getting to the beach.

USA Basketball announced the coaching staff for the 2015 Men’s U16 National Team earlier this week, and Sharman White – head coach at Miller Grove High School in Georgia – will serve as an assistant coach. It’s his first assistant coach assignment for USA Basketball after serving as a court coach at the Junior National Team training camp – same for fellow assistant coach Miles Simon. Returning as head coach is Don Showalter, who has helped USA Basketball win six gold medals in the past six years. --- FIBA, the governing body for international basketball, is a good source for scouting USA Basketball’s competition around the world. Here’s one of’s latest stories about the head coach of Argentina.
