Additional Quotes: USA U18 Men vs. U.S. Virgin Islands

  • Date:
    Jul 20, 2016

Shaka Smart (USA U18 and University of Texas head coach)
On tonight’s game:

I thought our guys did some good things. I really thought we played well together, in terms of passing the basketball – 35 assists. We did a nice job against their zone of finding open pockets and making the extra pass. I thought that first group of five guys really set the tone by playing unselfishly, and then in the second half, that group did a terrific job on the defensive end. For parts of the game, we let them get loose from outside. They shot 44 3s, so they are going make some of them, but we need to do a better job of contesting.

On the USA’s 35 assists:
We have a lot of good players, and we’ve just tried to encourage these guys to share the basketball and be unselfish and give up a good shot to get a great job. They did a great job. I think it starts with Markelle (Fultz) and Matt Coleman, Trae Young, those guys have done a really good job making the extra pass and finding their teammates.

Matt Coleman III (Oak Hill Academy/Norfolk, Va.)
On tonight’s game:

I think we picked up from yesterday, and played with more energy and intensity. We got stops when we needed to, and we hit shots. That made the rest of the game easy for all of us.

As one of the guards, is it fun to play on this team with so many great scorers?
It makes the game easier and more fun, because you have so many options. You can pick and choose who needs a shot and when they need a shot. It’s just fun.

What do you expect against the host Chile tomorrow?
It’s going to be hectic in here, a big crowd. They might be against us, but we have to stick together and get the job done.

Hamidou Diallo (Putnam Science Academy/Corona, N.Y.)
On tonight’s game:

I think we did alright. We could have done a lot of things better. We could have moved the ball more, and we could have played better defense in the first half. But, we ended up getting a great win.

Is it fun to play on this team?
It’s just fun. We are blessed to be here, and we are coming out to put on a show for the crowd. Every time we get a fast break, it’s just fun.

Markelle Fultz (DeMatha Catholic H.S./Upper Marlboro, Md.)
On tonight’s game:

I think we played pretty good. We picked it up on defense. In the second half, we didn’t let them score for a long time. I think we are learning from our mistakes in the last game, and each game we are getting better and better. We didn’t play our best, but we played better than yesterday.

Kevin Huerter (Shenendehowa Central H.S./Clifton Park, N.Y.)
On tonight’s game:

It wasn’t our best game. There are lot of things we can still do better, but it was a step in the right direction.

What do you think the team needs to do better?
Just to continue to play with energy. It is a big thing that the coaches have been stressing. When we play hard for the whole game, we show energy, we are really tough to stop.

Is it fun playing on this team?
It’s a lot of fun. It’s the first time playing with this group of guys. There obviously are all really good players, so we’re just having a lot of fun out here.
