Additional Quotes: USA U17 Women 65, China 50 In The Bronze Medal Game

  • Date:
    Jul 2, 2016

USA head coach Dori Oldaker (Mt. Lebanon H.S., Pa.)
On the game:

I really like the way we came out and jumped on them and played pretty well and took a decent lead going into halftime. Then we let them get back in the game. We are like the cardiac kids. But, down the stretch we really pulled it together and went on some nice runs. They really executed well tonight in our offenses, and it showed. I thought our pressure really showed when we pressed China. I thought it kind of wore them down.

What have you seen out of this team throughout your time with them?
The players have had incredible work ethic. They really played hard, and they played together. At times we didn’t play smart, but I think we could have gotten a little bit smarter had we had a little more time together.

How does it feel to win a bronze medal?
Just to even say the word, medal, is a great feeling. I’m really happy for the players. I’m happy for the coaching staff and all the hard work they put in, and I’m happy for the support staff. It’s a pretty good feeling.

Janelle Bailey (Providence Day School/Matthews, N.C.)
On the game:
Both teams were coming off of losses, so we knew it was going to be very competitive. We wanted to win this and to go home with a medal.

I thought we rebounded well, knowing that we had China’s Xu Han to defend. She is a great player. I thought we did that well. The keys that we focused on – finding a way to win, boxing out and rebounding, taking care of the ball – I think we did those things.

How does it feel to win a bronze medal?
It feels pretty awesome. It’s been a long journey. We were playing the best teams from around the world and to be in the top three, that really means something.

Maya Dodson (St. Francis H.S./Alpharetta, Ga.)
Was the team nervous when China came within two points?
I don’t think we were nervous. We knew what we needed to do. We just had to calm down and execute our plays, which at the end we were able to do.

Do you feel like the team played its best game in the last game?
We played with a lot of heart, and we just didn’t stop.

How does it feel to win a bronze medal?
It means a lot. It is the first medal for a lot of us. It’s great to be a part of USA Basketball and play overseas and win something for your country.

Taylor Mikesell (Jackson H.S./Massillon, Ohio)
On the game:

I thought we played really well. I thought we fought back with a lot of resiliency after losing the game that we did against Australia. I thought we played really well together, and we all wanted it really bad.

On her 3-pointers when the USA led by just two points:
I was open, and my teammates found me. Coach told me to keep shooting, so I let it fly.

How does it feel to win a bronze medal?
It feels really good. Obviously, we didn’t come here and get what we wanted. But, it feels good leaving with a medal.
