Additional Quotes: USA U18 Women Versus Brazil

USA Head Coach Suzie McConnell-Serio (Pittsburgh)
On the game:

We got off to a slow start. Brazil came at us right from the beginning, attacked and put some points on the board. We didn’t respond very well. We made some substitutions and had some players come off the bench. I thought Chennedy Carter changed the complexion of the game. She was aggressive getting to the rim and defensively did a lot of good things. Having Lauren Cox back was huge for us with their size inside. She challenged shots, rebounded and had a presence on the block. Those two really were a spark off the bench. We got solid performances from a lot of people. Brazil is very talented. They are really a good team, and I was very happy with the way our team responded after we took that first punch.

On the second half:
Over the course of the game, every time Brazil made a run, we answered. I thought our players responded with execution, with good decision making, with shot selection, and we found ways to score. I thought Ty Harris did a really nice job of running the team, executing and setting everyone up. Dana Evans coming off the bench, we got solid performances from both. That’s key to have two point guards that can run your team. Everyone was great. Megan Walker was really good tonight, as far as being a solid player and when we needed something in transition. Megan does things quietly. You look at the stat sheet, and she is scoring, she has an assist and she is impacting our team. She just has a presence on the floor.

I’m very excited about the win tonight, because Brazil is a very good team.

Sidney Cooks (Saint Joseph Catholic Academy/Kenosha, Wis.)
On the game:

I thought it was tough. I was nervous at first. It was a good matchup. I’m very proud that we pulled it out, and everyone played a big role in the win.

On the second half:
I think we found our confidence. We just put our minds to it, and that is what gave us the energy to stop them.

Lauren Cox (Flower Mound H.S./Flower Mound, Texas)
How did it feel to get back on the court after missing the first game due to a sprained left ankle?

I felt really good. My legs felt really good to get back out there.

On the game:
We started off slow in both halves. I think we really picked it up as the game went on. We started to find our rhythm and started to work together, and we matched all of their runs.

On the team’s chemistry:
I think we’ve really come along as a team. We’ve started talking to each other and playing well together.

Dana Evans (West Side Leadership Academy/Gary, Ind.)
On her six assists:

Lauren (Cox) is tall, so I see her, and she keeps her hands high and the ball high, so she was able to finish at the rim.

On the game:
I think we played a pretty good game. The defense can improve, and our transition defense can improve, but we executed well.

On the slow start:
We came out slow, and they came out ready. We were more relaxed than anything. We have to come out with more intensity.

Tyasha Harris (Heritage Christian/Noblesville, Ind.)
On the game:

We came out really slow, but after that we regrouped, and we did what we had to do and stuck with the game plan.

On the second half:
We knew what they did, and we settled into the game. We just kept trying to protect our lead.
