Additional Quotes: USA U18 Women vs. Puerto Rico

  • Date:
    Jul 16, 2016

USA Head Coach Suzie McConnell-Serio (Pittsburgh)
On the game:

This team is fun to coach. They play hard and make plays. We’ve had a balanced scoring attack with different leading scorers every night. We have really been clicking on all cylinders, and we hope that continues going into tomorrow night.

They do what you ask them to do and execute defensively. We don’t have a lot of time to prepare for the teams that we are playing, so we are making adjustment throughout the game, and they’ve done everything that we have asked. There is a great deal of trust among this team out on the floor, which is a big reason why we have been successful so far.

On the second quarter:
Having watched Puerto Rico, we saw that they had made runs on teams with their press, with mixing up zone and man. We talked about keeping the focus and having a concentration on us and what we were trying to do to get to the gold medal game.

We knew that they shot the ball well. Oppenheimer from Puerto Rico had come into this game shooting the ball well from 3, so we were looking to key on her and limit their penetration. The adjustments that we have made defensively over the course of these four games, our players have been tremendous, buying into what we are doing and playing very unselfish basketball. They are fun to coach and this is a great group. They seem very focused on winning the gold medal tomorrow night.

How does it feel to reach the gold medal game?
It’s exciting. But one more game. And we know that we will have their hand full with either Brazil or Canada. Both teams are very talented. We scrimmaged Canada, and we played Brazil, so we are familiar with either opponent. I just know that going into tomorrow night, it’s about us. We have to play a great game no matter who we play.

Chennedy Carter (Timberview H.S./Mansfield, Texas)
On the game:

We played well. We moved the ball and got open shots. Everybody was on tonight, everybody was hitting, and we just looked for the open man, and we got the job done tonight.

Was pushing the pace part of the game plan?
Any time our posts get the rebound, we outlet to our guards, and we run the floor. If we don’t find anything, we stop and set up our offense.

How does it feel to reach the gold medal game?
It’s my first time, so I’m really happy and excited. Just reaching it isn’t enough for me. I just hope that we can actually win the gold medal and bring it back to America.

Lauren Cox (Flower Mound H.S./Flower Mound, Texas)
On the game:

We played really well. We were really moving the ball well and working together. We pushed the ball and got out in transition.

On the U.S. defense:
We played really good defense. We went over their plays in shoot around, and we did what we were supposed to do with screens and everything.

How does it feel to reach the gold medal game?
It’s always a great feeling to reach a gold medal game. We can’t take Canada or Brazil lightly. It’s going to be a tough game. I’m ready to play.

Dana Evans (West Side Leadership Academy/Gary, Ind.)
On the game:

We got our confidence up for tomorrow’s gold medal game. We are ready to play.

Was pushing the pace part of the game plan?
I think we are at our best when we run, and we outlet and go. We play much better when we are pushing the pace.

How does it feel to reach the gold medal game?
It feels really good. All the practicing, all the warming up, paid off.

Tyasha Harris (Heritage Christian/Noblesville, Ind.)
On the game:

We just stayed with our system, and we moved the ball well, and we never let up. We just kept going and playing our game.

On the second quarter:
It was more about us and staying focused. We tried to make sure we were executing well.
