EVENT DESCRIPITION:

First held in 1979 and known as the FIBA Junior World Championship, the U19 World Championship features the world’s top 19-year-old and younger players. FIBA holds U19 World Championships every two years.

The USA earned its qualifying spot for the U19 worlds last summer by capturing gold at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship with a 5-0 record.

ELIGIBILITY:

Athletes eligible for this team must be 19 years old or younger (born on or after 1/1/98) and U.S. citizens.

2017 QUALIFIED TEAMS (16):

In addition to host Egypt, which earned the silver medal at the 2016 FIBA Africa U18 Championship, nations qualified for the 2017 FIBA U19 World Championship include Angola (gold medalist) and Mali (bronze medalist) from FIBA Africa; Iran (gold medalist), Japan (silver medalist) and South Korea (bronze medalist) from FIBA Asia; while FIBA Americas teams include the United States (gold medalist), Canada (silver medalist), Brazil (bronze medalist) and Puerto Rico (fourth place); France (gold medalist), Lithuania (silver medalist), Italy (bronze medalist), Germany (fourth place) and Spain (fifth place) from FIBA Europe; and New Zealand (gold medalist) from FIBA Oceania.

PRELIMINARY ROUND GROUPS:

Group A:  France, New Zealand, South Korea and a nation from the Americas to be determined by FIBA at a later date.

Group B: Egypt, Germany, Lithuania and Puerto Rico.

Group C: Canada, Japan, Mali and Spain.

Group D: Angola, Iran, Italy, USA.

USA EVENT HISTORY:

In the 12 U19 competitions held, the USA men’s teams have won six gold and three silver medals, including gold in three of the past four U19 championships (2009, 2013 and 2015). In 2015 the USA men finished 7-0 to capture gold, and now own an all-time win-loss record of 85-13 in the competition.
