EVENT DESCRIPTION: |
Growing up, many athletes watch the Olympics and dream of one day competing on the world stage and winning gold medals. In 2010, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) created an opportunity for young athletes to achieve that dream, and the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) launched that year in Singapore. The YOGs are multi-sport events held every four years and feature both summer (2018, 2022, etc.) and winter editions (2020, 2024, etc.). Featuring athletes age 15-18, it is anticipated that the 2018 YOGs will have representation from 206 different countries in 32 sports, including 3x3 basketball. The basketball competition at the Youth Olympic Games is a 3x3 format organized by the IOC and FIBA. The 2018 Youth Olympic Games is expected to include 20 men’s teams and 20 women’s teams, as well as individual contests for both men and women. |
ELIGIBILITY: |
In order to be eligible, athletes must participate in at least one FIBA-sanctioned 3x3 tournament in 2018 prior to participating in the 2018 USA Basketball 3x3 U18 National Tournament. To receive an invitation to participate in the 2018 USA Basketball 3x3 U18 National Tournament, teams must be selected through a qualifying 3x3 tournament and approved by USA Basketball. Athletes eligible for this team must be 18-years-old or younger (born on or after 1/1/00) and U.S. citizens. |
2018 QUALIFIED TEAMS (20): | Host Argentina and the USA, which earned its 2018 Youth Olympic Games berth by capturing the gold medal at the 2017 FIBA 3x3 U18 World Cup, are both assured a spot in the tournament. The remaining 18 places will be allocated based on the FIBA world ranking as of April 1, 2018. |
PRELIMINARY ROUND GROUPS: | TBD (four groups of five teams each) |
EVENT HISTORY: | The USA women have competed in both editions of the Youth Olympic Games, own a 19-1 record overall, and captured gold at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games and bronze at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. |
USA WOMEN’S YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES TEAMS: | Briyona Canty, Andraya Carter, Amber Henson and Kiah Stokes teamed up on the 2010 squad, while the 2014 USA team was comprised of De’Janae Boykin, Napheesa Collier, Arike Ogunbowale and Katie Lou Samuelson. |
