“It’s an incredible honor to be recognized by USA Basketball as a co-recipient of the Developmental Coach of the Year award,” Berube said. “This award is the result of the hard working, talented and driven group that I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by this past spring. I couldn't have dreamed up a better coaching staff than Steve Gomez and Vanessa Nygaard. The student-athletes that the committee selected for the team bought into the USA Basketball culture and worked extremely hard to become a cohesive unit both on and off the court. Many thanks go out to Carol Callan (USA Basketball Women’s National Team Director) and her wonderful staff that put our team in the position to succeed.”

Showalter earned an unprecedented ninth-straight share of the USA Basketball Developmental Coach of the Year Award after he guided the USA U16 men to a fifth-straight U16 title from June 14-18 in Formosa, Argentina. The USA U16 men topped its five opponents by an average of 57.6 points per game.

“This is a very humbling honor, coaching with USA Basketball, that includes many other people,” Showalter said. “Obviously, the players were coachable and bought into our mission and standards as we prepared them for competition. My two assistant coaches Scott Fitch and Stan Waterman were outstanding to work with and provided valuable knowledge. This award is one that I truly am proud to receive from USA Basketball.”

2017 marks the 22nd year USA Basketball has presented its Development Coach of the Year award, which was established in 1996 to recognize a USA Basketball head coach who, during the year of the award, made significant impact on the success of individual athlete and team performance at the developmental level.

“The U16 national teams often are the first USA Basketball experience for many of the team members, and USA Basketball is fortunate to have leaders such as Carla and Don at the helm of those teams,” said Jim Tooley, USA Basketball CEO. “They are excellent coaches who led the USA to a gold medal and who also helped many other young players develop their game. USA Basketball is grateful for their commitment.”

Under Berube’s guidance, USA forward Aliyah Boston was named tournament MVP, and the USA led the tournament in 14 statistical categories, including points per game (91.8), scoring defense (38.0), field goal percentage (.415), rebounding margin (+21.8), blocked shots (8.2), assists (19.4) and steals (20.4).

“What made coach Berube a great coach in my opinion was her love for the game,” Boston said. “When she coached us, it was clear she really knew what she was saying, and she just wanted us to get better. In the end for her, it was not just about us winning gold as a team but that each of us individually became stronger and better players. She was very approachable and easy to learn from.”

Berube also served as the lead clinician during the 2017 USA Basketball Women’s U16 National Team Trials, which featured 133 athletes.

As the head coach at Tufts University since 2002-03, Berube in 2016-17 led Tufts to the NCAA Division III championship game and an impressive 30-3 record, which tied for the most wins in program history.

Showalter has been at the helm of the USA Men’s U16 National Team since the inaugural event in 2009, and under his direction the USA men have not lost while compiling an incredible 25-0 record in five U16 championships.

In 2017, U.S. forward Vern Carey Jr. was named MVP, while the USA led the tournament in 14 statistical categories, including points per game (112.6); scoring defense (55.0); rebounding margin (+16.4); assists (19.8); steals (16.6); and field goal (.569), 3-point (.351) and free throw (.704) percentage.

“Playing for coach Showalter was probably one of the best experiences of my life,” Carey said. “He pushed me to be a better person and a better player, and he pushed me to be out of my comfort zone.”

Showalter also led the 2017 USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team October minicamp that took place Oct. 7-8 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, which he has done since 2009.

Showalter joined the USA Basketball Youth Division in May 2016 as the Director of Coach Development after 42 years as a high school boys basketball head coach in Iowa.
