Jeff Van Gundy Selected as 2017 USA Basketball National Coach of the Year

After leading USA Basketball to a gold medal at the FIBA AmeriCup 2017 and to two wins in the first window of the FIBA World Cup Qualifying Games, USA head coach Jeff Van Gundy today was named the 2017 USA Basketball National Coach of the Year.

“To be able to represent your country is certainly an honor in itself,” Van Gundy said. “Something like coach of the year is above and beyond. I’m really honored by it all. And for General Dempsey (USA Basketball chairman) to be the one speaking, as a beacon of leadership, that made it even more special.”

2016 marks the 21st time USA Basketball has presented its National Coach of the Year award, which was first earned by USA Basketball Women's National Team and Olympic head coach Tara VanDerveer in 1996. The USA Basketball National Coach of the Year Award is given to a USA Basketball head coach who made a significant impact on the success of individual athlete and team performance at the highest levels of competition in a manner consistent with the highest ethical, professional and moral standards.

Under the leadership of Van Gundy, the 2017 USA Men’s AmeriCup Team captured a 5-0 record and gold medal from Aug. 28-Sept. 3 in Montevideo, Uruguay, and Cordoba, Argentina, where the USA beat opponents by an average of 19.6 points per game.

Van Gundy, who completed his first USA Basketball coaching assignment at the AmeriCup, also led the USA World Cup Qualifying Team to an 85-78 win over Puerto Rico on Nov. 23 and a 91-55 win over Mexico on Nov. 26.

“Jeff had a difficult task in 2017 for USA Basketball, leading teams in major competitions that had very little training time, but he handled the challenges successfully and established two impressive teams,” said Jim Tooley, USA Basketball CEO. “The USA AmeriCup Team earned tough wins against two home teams, and the group that earned two FIBA World Cup Qualifying wins helped USA Basketball begin a new FIBA competition schedule on the right note. We are very grateful for his service and his leadership.”

Among the 12-team AmeriCup competition, the USA led the field in scoring defense (63.2), field goal percentage defense (.345) and 3-point field goal percentage defense (.215).

“He is a great coach,” said Jameel Warney, USA AmeriCup and World Cup Qualifying forward who was named the 2017 USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year. “I learned a lot – just to play hard every practice, every game. He put me in a great position to succeed.”

 The USA AmeriCup Team featured tournament MVP Warney, and Darrun Hilliard joined him on the all-tournament team. The USA recorded wins over Uruguay and Argentina on their home courts, including a thrilling, 20-point comeback win in the gold medal game against Argentina in Argentina.

Van Gundy, who has served since 2007 as an ESPN NBA analyst, will continue to lead the USA Men’s World Cup Qualifying Team during the February competition window.
