The women’s medal-round matchups are set at the USA Basketball 3x3 U18 National Championships, and leading the way are undefeated squads Team Denver (5-0) and Team Quest (4-0). The 2018 USA Basketball 3x3 U18 National Championships are being played at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
Joining those two No. 1 seeds with a bye into Sunday’s medal-round quarterfinals are the second-place teams from each preliminary round group – Metropath (4-1) and BS30 (3-1).
“I think we played really well as a team,” said BS30’s Maddie Burke (Central Bucks West High School/Doylestown, Pa.). “We shot the ball pretty well and got the ball moving. That was good.
“We need to learn from today, like the little things we do, like switching on screens and what we do on screens.”
The knock-out rounds will kick off on Sunday, March 25, with quarterfinal play-in games that will pit Team Valor (1-3) against Northeast Ohio Elite (1-4) at 9:40 a.m. (all times listed are MDT) and Bruins (2-3) versus Hard2Guard (0-4) and Denver Snipers (2-2) against SCNS (0-5) at 10 a.m.
Winning teams will have to advance through quarterfinal and semifinal play to reach the national championship game, which will be streamed live on usab.com for both the men and women beginning at 12:50 p.m.
“It was a really good experience,” said Maggie Moore (Southmoreland High School/Ruffs Dale, Pa.) of Bruins, which will compete in a quarterfinal play-in game. “There was good competition and good girls to play against. Coming to the training center is neat and seeing all of the athletes here is really fun.
“I’m really excited to keep playing tomorrow. Hopefully we can win.”
Not only is a championship title at stake, the USA Basketball 3x3 U18 National Championships also are serving as a trials for the 2018 U.S. Youth Olympic Games, which will be held Oct. 6-18 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The USA women, by virtue of a gold medal finish at the 2017 FIBA 3x3 U18 World Cup, and Argentina as the host nation both are assured a spot in the women’s 3x3 YOG tournament. The remaining 18 places will be allocated based on the FIBA world ranking as of April 1, 2018. Athletes eligible for this event must be U.S. citizens who are 18 years old or younger (born on or after Jan. 1, 2000).
The USA Basketball 3x3 U18 National Championships are played according to FIBA 3x3 rules, including: a 10-minute game clock and a 12-second shot clock; free throws and made baskets inside the arc are worth one point and made baskets from beyond the arc are worth two points; the first team to 21 points or whichever team is ahead at the end of regulation play is the winner; and if the game is tied at the end of regulation play, the first team to score two points in overtime wins.<
