Guest Speakers Announced for 2018 USA Basketball Southern California Coach Academy

The USA Basketball Coach Academy – presented by Nike – today announced its first stop for the 2018 season, which will be on May 5-6 at Sage Hill School in Newport Coast, California. Registration is available online.

USA Basketball coach academies provide valuable insight and education to coaches and administrators of basketball.

Academy sessions impart to coaches of all levels the USA Basketball curriculum for a proper skill development path to teach basketball to children of all ages and ability levels. Guest speakers deliver on- and off-court sessions on basketball and leadership topics.

Speakers expected at the USA Basketball Southern California Coach Academy include:

  • Don Showalter, USA Basketball coach director, youth division
  • Kevin Eastman, former NBA assistant coach and director of operations
  • Barry Hecker, former NBA coach
  • Bonnie Henrickson, head women’s basketball coach at the University of California, Santa Barbara
  • Matt King, CCV Stars director of operations and boys basketball coach at O’Connor High School (Ariz.)
  • Vanessa Nygaard, a gold-medal winning assistant coach for the 2017 USA Basketball Women’s U16 National Team and head girls basketball coach and senior associate athletic director at Windward School (Calif.)
  • George Raveling, Nike global basketball sports marketing director
  • Dave Severns, Los Angeles Clippers pro personnel scout
  • Miles Simon, assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers and a gold-medal winning assistant coach for the 2015 USA U16 and 2016 USA U17 national teams
  • Heather Stewart, Gavilan Community College assistant coach and Positive Coaching Alliance trainer
  • Kevin Sutton, head coach of the victorious 2011 USA Nike Hoop Summit team and a gold-medal winning assistant coach for the 2009 USA men’s U16 and 2010 U17 teams and an assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of Pittsburgh
  • Scott Thompson, motivational speaker
  • Heidi VanDerveer, head women’s basketball coach at the University of California San Diego
  • Danielle Viglione, co-owner of Sacramento Skills Academy

Registration for this coach academy is $185 and includes on- and off-court presentations, Nike/USA Basketball gift items, catered meals, a USA Basketball memorabilia viewing, networking time and training for a USA Basketball 2017-18 coach license. More speakers are expected to be added to the schedule.

USA Basketball gold-licensed coaches are eligible for discounted registration, and offers are available for groups of 10 or more. Additionally, the first 50 registrants will receive an advanced registration discount of 25 percent off.
