  • Date:
    Jan 17, 2019

The 2018 FIBA 3x3 World Cup for Women draw was held today, and the 2018 USA Basketball Women’s 3x3 World Cup Team was placed into Group C for preliminary round play along with Andorra, Iran, defending champion Russia and Uganda.

The 2018 FIBA 3x3 World Cup, which will feature a men’s and women’s tournament as well as skills contests, will be held June 8-12 in Manila, Philippines.

Competing in Group A are Czech Republic, Italy, Malaysia, Turkmenistan and Venezuela; Group B is comprised of Argentina, China, France, Kazakhstan and Switzerland; while Group D features Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, host Philippines and Spain.

Following round-robin preliminary games, teams will be seeded, and the top two finishing teams from each pool will advance to the quarterfinals. Winning teams will advance to the semifinals, and the gold and bronze medal games will be held June 12.

The four-member, 2018 USA Women’s 3x3 World Cup Team will be selected following the 2018 USA Basketball Women’s 3x3 National Championship, scheduled to be held April 20-22 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The fifth FIBA 3x3 World Cup, an event launched in 2012 and held in 2014 and 2016 before moving to an annual event in 2017, is expected to feature 20 men's teams and 20 women's teams in 2018. In addition to the men’s and women’s 3x3 tournaments, included in the 2018 3x3 World Cup program will be skills contests, giving athletes chances to win additional medals.

The USA women’s 3x3 teams qualified for the 2012, 2014 and 2016 3x3 World Cups, but missed out on the 2017 event due to FIBA 3x3 rankings. However, in those three events the USA compiled a 23-2 record and captured gold medals in 2012 and 2014 and a bronze medal in 2016.

The 2012 USA 3x3 team featured Skylar Diggins, Bria Hartley, Chiney Ogwumike and Ann Strother; the 2014 team was comprised of Cierra Burdick, Sara Hammond, Jewell Loyd and Tiffany Mitchell; and the 2016 team listed Linnae Harper, Alexis Jennings, Natalie Romeo and Chatrice White.
