USA Heads Into Quarterfinals After Inaugural Day of FIBA 3X3 Women’s Series

On the first day of competition in the FIBA 3X3 Women’s Series, the USA finished 1-2 and will play in the quarterfinals against Netherlands (2-1) at 6:30 a.m. EDT on June 1 in Chengdu, China. All games are streamed live on the event website: ws.fiba3x3.com/2019

The USA finished as the No. 3 seed in Group A, which was topped by Australia (3-0), followed by No. 2 France (2-1) and No. 4 Mongolia (0-3).

“This 3x3 World Series has been so much fun,” said USA guard Aleah Goodman (Oregon State/Oregon City, Ore.). “Obviously, we just finished the first day, but it has been a blast. We’re competing against people who have played together for years. And us coming in, just putting a team together for the first day, I’m really proud of how we have been playing, and it’s been a great experience and a lot of fun.”

Australia and China (2-1), which was the top team in Group B, will await the winners of the quarterfinal games. Australia will play the winner of the USA – Netherlands, while China will face the winner of Group A No. 2 seed France (2-1) and Group B No. 3 seed Japan (1-2).

“We got to come out with fire, and just be super competitive, don’t let them beat our effort,” Goodman said of the quarterfinal matchup before the USA knew its opponent. “That is something that is super important in 3X3, your effort has to be there, and you have to fight the entire game.”

In preliminary round group play on May 31, the USA opened with a 21-11 loss to France, and then fell to Australia 18-14. It rebounded to top Mongolia 21-14.

“I think the team did a great job of knowing our roles,” said Christyn Williams (Connecticut/Little Rock, Ark.) of the USA’s win over Mongolia. “We feed the post the entire game, and it worked in our favor. We did a great job of communicating on defense, and it helped us.”

The U.S. team is rounded out by Bella Alarie (Princeton/Bethesda, Md.) and Charli Collier (Texas/Baytown, Texas).

The USA team is comprised of four athletes who took part in the 2019 Red Bull USA Basketball 3x3 Nationals on May 3-4 in Las Vegas.

The FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series is a new 3x3 competition series dedicated to women athletes from around the globe. Up to 12 events in the FIBA 3X3 Women’s Series are expected to take place this year from May to September and will be announced throughout the season on the official website ws.fiba3x3.com.

With the inclusion of 3X3 in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, fans will see the launch of a new basketball discipline in Olympic competition. The exciting and fast-paced game officially was unveiled at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

Played on a half court with a 10-minute clock, and a 12-second shot clock, the first team to 21 points, or the team in the lead at the end of regulation, is the winner.
