FIBA Women's 3X3 U18 World Cup Gold Medal Game Quotes

  • Date:
    Jun 7, 2019

Olivia Cochran (Carver H.S./Columbus, Ga.)

On winning gold:
“It feels so unreal. I was so excited, I couldn’t even celebrate. I was really happy that we pulled through, and we won the gold.”

On France in the semifinal:
“We got to play more skilled players, so it made us play hungry and better.”

On both teams winning:

It felt amazing to know our boys can pull through a tough game and just play strong and physical against a good team.”

Madison Hayes (East Hamilton H.S./Ooltewah, Tenn.)

Rickea Jackson (Detroit Edison Public Academy/Detroit, Mich.)

On winning gold:

“It feels amazing. I’m just over the top right now, I don’t even know how to explain it. It is such a blessing.”

On the team’s strength:

Staying together, playing as one and definitely defense. Communication was our biggest things, so that definitely helped us win against these teams.”

On her role:

“I think I helped them by contributing off the court, helping them see things they probably don’t see, and getting to the basket, trying to make things happen.”

On the U.S. men and women both winning gold

“It was just an unbelievable feeling, just to see the smiles on both groups faces from the same country. Not everyone even has this opportunity to even be here, so it is just all a blessing.”

Hailey Van Lith (Cashmere H.S./Wenatchee, Wash.)

On winning gold:

“There are just no words to describe it. Each time feels as good as the last time. I’m just really blessed to be able to represent my country with my teammates, and I’m just so proud of them.”

How did the team adjust to win three games on the last day?

“I just think one thing that we kept the same was our intensity, our defense and our ability to play together, because those are three things that the wind and the other players can’t change. So, I think we did a great job of being consistent with those things.”

On both teams winning gold:

“It was awesome. We had a really good relationship with the boys team, and we just had so much fun. There is not another group of people that I would have rather been with.”

On Mongolia:

“It was great. We had a great week here. I love it, and the people were great. Just the way they supported women’s basketball, was something that was special, and me and my teammates will never forget it.”
