• Game Story

USA head coach Mark Campbell (Union University)
On the game:
What we saw in the very first quarter was just who they are, at their peak at this age, and it’s only going to get better.

They were ready today. We got to meet this afternoon and share our feelings about each other, and I’ve always believed once people know how you feel about them, you are going to get everything from them. It was very clear, they felt very strongly about one another, and we as a coaching staff feel very strongly about them, and so it showed in how they played.

On the team:
In a day and age when we value results, they are about the right things, too, and they are just really talented. The longer I coach, the more I value the things that are inside more than the things that are outside, and this group is just full of the things that are inside.

On the USA’s three all-tournament members, including MVP Payton Verhulst:
It doesn’t surprise me. I don’t think we really know Lauren’s value completely, because of the things she altars on the defensive end. And, both Sonia and Payton have been so solid during the whole tournament – points per game, percentages, steals, defense, rebounding, it’s been everything. I think I knew that about Payton early on in camp and knew that about Lauren, but Sonia came out of nowhere and has been one of the better players on our team the whole time.

Lauren Betts (Grandview H.S./Centennial, Colo.)
On the game:
We were really just trying to make sure that we rebounded well. That is was one of Canada’s biggest strengths. We really pressured well. We all worked together. We really wanted it, so we just made sure that we worked hard together as a team.

Was that one of the more fun games you’ve been a part of?
Yes. This is like the best game I’ve ever played in. I’m so happy that I got to play with this amazing group of girls. I’m just so proud of how hard we worked, and that we got here.

On being named to the all-tournament team:
I’m just so thankful for it. To be playing against all of these awesome girls, and to be able to stand out like that and become all-tournament, that is really amazing.

Sonia Citron (The Ursuline School/Scarsdale, N.Y.)
On being named to the all-tournament team:
It’s a great feeling. I couldn’t have done it without my teammates. It’s just an honor to be chosen for that.

Londynn Jones (Santiago H.S./Riverside, Calif.)
On the game:
All the hard work that we have been through, all the dedication we have had, I felt like we just left it all out on the floor and gave it our all.

On winning a gold medal:
This is like a dream. It doesn’t get any better than this. We are so thankful, and we wouldn’t have done it without each other. We are a family now, so it feels amazing.

Payton Verhulst (Bishop Meige H.S./De Soto, Kan.)
On the game:
We came out strong, and we did exactly what we needed to do. We kept them off the offensive boards and just listened to what our coach wanted us to do.

On being named MVP:
It means everything. Every single person on our team could have won this award. I’m just so thankful that they picked me, and I couldn’t imagine any other team to go out and win this gold medal with.
