USA Basketball’s Red Bull 3X Qualifiers Roll Through Minneapolis and Houston
Forty-Four Elite Men’s and Women’s Teams Turn Out on Path to find USA Basketball 3x3 National Team Players
With the Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Regionals kicking off in September, men’s and women’s players continue to vie for official USA Basketball points in qualifier action as the search continues to find the best 3x3 players in the country for next year’s 3x3 USA national teams.
In Minnesota, the women’s division came down to the wire between Minnesota OG and Oldies But Goodies, with critical 2-point buckets from deep being the difference in a 11-10 victory for Minnesota OG. The four members of the team came in with strong college and professional overseas experience.
“We told each other we made it this far and we aren't going to lose this game,” said Breanna Salley of Minnesota OG. “We’re friends off the court and we know how to push each other and hold each other accountable.”
On the men’s side, 3Ball Minnesota rolled to a much easier victory over Infinite Hoops by a score of 16-9. The members of the winning team have been playing 3x3 tournaments together since 2012, and experience in the format was a key factor in taking the Red Bull 3X crown.
“Once we got that lead, we were looking to run them off the 2-point line and trade 1s,” said Paris Kyles of 3Ball Minnesota. “We knew we had the advantage with our size and ability to create mismatches.”
In Houston, there was a familiar face on the men’s side taking the crown. Tray Dunn, a key member of a squad that took first place at the Red Bull 3X Atlanta qualifier in July, found his way to Houston with a team called KIRKGANGATL. A key strategy for them was to have a man ready at the 2-point line to knock down an open shot. In the final versus Country Boyz, the action was blistering with both teams matching each other with a barrage of 2-point shots. However, KIRKGANGATL began to pull away with strong defense and stayed hot from deep on the way to a 21-9 victory.
“We stayed on each other all-day,” said Dunn. We talk a lot more than most teams and hit the open shots when it mattered the most.”
3x3 is played on a half court with a 10-minute game clock and 12-second shot clock, where the winner is the first team to score 21 points or the team in the lead at the end of the 10-minute regulation.
With 13 qualifiers down and nine to go, the search continues to help identify the players who could potentially compete for USA Basketball’s men’s and women’s 3x3 national teams in 2020. Cleveland, Raleigh and Phoenix host qualifiers this coming weekend and registration is open now on the men’s and women’s side.
The winning teams at these qualifiers will have an opportunity of advancing to the Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Regionals in September 2019, and then to the Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Nationals in April 2020, which will be used to select the USA men’s and women’s 3x3 national teams.
